This week, Robert Lewandowski, a star for Barcelona, gave an account of his unsuccessful attempt to join Manchester United in the Premier League.

This comes as it was revealed that the Pole had decided to bring his skills to Old Trafford while he was with Borussia Dortmund.

Naturally, Lewandowski has had a successful career on the continent.

After playing for all of the aforementioned teams—Boston, Bayern Munich, and now Barcelona—the 36-year-old has established himself as one of the most notable goal scorers of his generation.

However, Lewandowski’s career could have taken a very different and dramatic turn if things had gone a little differently.

During his appearance on Rio Ferdinand’s podcast this week, the veteran forward discussed his connections to Manchester United, which go all the way back to 2012.

Additionally, in statements compiled by Mundo Deportivo, Lewandowski acknowledged that he had already decided to go to England at that point:

“I recall having that talk with Sir Alex Ferguson in 2012, when I made the decision to sign with Manchester United.

We were playing some games against Borussia Dortmund during the preseason. I knew he would give me a call. I knew I was going to play 45 minutes, so they substituted me at halftime. After that, I received the call, and my English was not as good as it is now. And, most importantly, if I was going to speak with someone like Sir Alex Ferguson, who was calling me with that Scottish accent.

“You know, I knew exactly what I had to say to him. Yes, I would like to play for Manchester United.

“I recall the discussion with the Dortmund president. They needed me, he informed me. that I was very important to them and that the moment was not right for them to sell me to Manchester United.
