Manchester United’s defender, Harry Maguire, has made an unexpected choice on his move following the signing of Matthijs de Ligt.
Harry Maguire, the Manchester United defender, is resolute in his decision to remain at Old Trafford and vie for a position in the team, despite the recent arrival of fellow centre-back Matthijs de Ligt.

De Ligt’s move from Bayern Munich will intensify the battle for Maguire this season, following his prior difficulties in securing playing time.

Although De Ligt has been signed by his former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag, he may encounter challenges in securing a place in the squad. This is because Manchester United believes that the centre-back partnership of Lisandro Martinez and Leny Yoro is capable of rivalling any other in the Premier League.

Martinez, the Argentinean World Cup champion, has fully recovered from his injuries from the previous season, despite having signed a lucrative £52 million contract during the summer. Yoro’s preseason injury will hinder his participation at the start of the season.

This might perhaps provide an opportunity for Maguire to rejuvenate his Manchester United tenure. However, he still faces stiff competition from Martinez, De Ligt, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans.

Contrary to the possibility of being ranked as the fourth preferred option at Old Trafford, Maguire is prepared to vigorously compete for his position at United and currently has no intentions of departing from the club, as reported by talkSPORT.

Maguire is reportedly optimistic about receiving chances under Ten Hag and demonstrating his value as a crucial element of the team, as United aims to enhance their performance after a disappointing eighth-place finish last season.

After Yoro joined Manchester United, Maguire cautioned fans about their expectations for the teenager and emphasised his crucial role in providing support to the young players in the team.

‘I have not had extensive training sessions with him,’ Maguires commented on United’s new addition. However, I have observed video clips and noticed qualities in an 18-year-old centre back that possess all the desirable features one would seek.

‘It is important to remember that he is quite young.’ Although there may be occasional errors, he possesses all the essential qualities of a contemporary centre-back. I am confident that he will have a promising future.

As senior centre backs, it is our responsibility, namely mine, to assist him, maintain effective communication, and inform him about what he should anticipate.

‘There will be occasions when he may perceive the world to be overwhelming, and there will also be occasions when he will feel like the most exceptional player in the world.’ This club offers precisely that.

‘I believe it is crucial for us experienced players to assist the younger players in the club. It is becoming evident that there is a significant amount of skill within this team. However, in order for this talent to be effectively utilised, proper guidance is necessary. I believe that it is my responsibility, along with other teammates, to provide this guidance.

Maguire has accumulated a total of 207 appearances for Manchester United after his transfer from Leicester City in 2019, which involved a significant sum of £80 million. Last year at this time, he was stripped of the captain’s armband.

The Red Devils commence the new Premier League season on Friday evening with a home fixture against Fulham.
