According to sources, as part of INEOS’ ongoing cost-cutting initiatives, Manchester United has no plans to reciprocate Wayne Rooney’s offer of an ambassadorial position. Rooney has previously been offered the role by the Red Devils, but under the new administration, ambassadors are becoming less common.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s decision to sever Sir Alex Ferguson’s ambassadorial contract at the end of the season demonstrated how seriously he takes the cost reductions at Old Trafford.

Since leaving his position as manager of the club in 2013, the renowned Scot is thought to have been making more than £2 million annually.

However, after Ratcliffe was shocked by the astounding numbers in United’s accounts, he will be invited as a guest starting in the 2025–2026 season.

It is also thought that there is no chance of Rooney ever serving as an ambassador again at Old Trafford.

The Star claims that despite the 39-year-old’s legendary reputation at the club, United has rejected the idea of appointing him as an ambassador.

Since Rooney is currently the manager of Plymouth Argyle, a Championship team, an ambassadorial offer is out of the question.

Even if the record-breaking England international were unemployed, the research asserts that United’s new position would remain unchanged.

It was anticipated that Rooney would complete his illustrious playing career at United before losing favour under Jose Mourinho in the 2016–17 campaign.

This led him to return to Everton, his boyhood club, where he ended his playing career in 2021 and entered management.

In 2014, Rooney signed a new deal that included an ambassadorial post.

When he returned to Goodison Park, the pre-agreement came to an end, but at the time, it was said he would still receive a role offer.

However, INEOS severed connections with the newest United hero in an effort to put the club’s future first, so an offer didn’t come and isn’t anticipated to.

Just before leaving the Red Devils in 2017, Rooney broke Sir Bobby Charlton’s long-standing record with 253 goals in 559 games.

The celebrated No. 10 is the only player in United’s remarkable history to score more than 250 goals and won 16 major trophies during his tenure there.

Prior to Harry Kane’s ascent in March 2023, Rooney held the record for most goals scored by England, with 53 in 120 appearances.

Ratcliffe’s brutal rebuild after Ferguson’s release demonstrated that no one in United’s past was untouchable. Rooney is hardly an exception.
