Ruud van Nistelrooy was free to return to management when new Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim decided he didn’t want the Dutchman on his coaching staff.

Ruud van Nistelrooy rejected Burnley’s offer to take over as manager in preference of rejoining Manchester United, although Burnley may try again.

After new manager Ruben Amorim decided to hire his own coaching team, 48-year-old Van Nistelrooy was dismissed of his duties at Old Trafford on Monday. The former Red Devils striker, who scored 150 goals while playing for United from 2001 to 2006, served as interim manager for their final four games before the international break, winning three and drawing one.

That came after he returned to United in July as an assistant coach under Erik ten Hag, who was fired by the team last month. Having only managed PSV Eindhoven’s reserves and senior team in the past, Van Nistelrooy is currently looking for his next position.

After Vincent Kompany left for Bayern Munich in June, the former PSV, United, and Real Madrid striker had discussions with Burnley. After Burnley was demoted back to the Championship, Mirror Football reported at the time that Van Nistelrooy had met twice with chairman Alan Pace.
