UPDATE: Chief Referee Howard Webb has clarified that the decision not to award a penalty to Liverpool versus Manchester City was made purely by the referees and not by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Referees’ chief Howard Webb supports the decision of the VAR to not intervene in the penalty decision during the Liverpool-Man City match.

Jeremy Doku from Manchester City engages in a confrontation with Alexis Mac Allister from Liverpool in the closing moments of their 1-1 draw in the Premier League.

Manchester City’s Doku narrowly avoided conceding a penalty after his charge on Liverpool’s Mac Allister in the closing moments of their 1-1 draw in the Premier League.

Howard Webb, the head of referees, has affirmed that the video assistant referee made the correct decision by not intervening when Liverpool was not awarded a late penalty in their recent 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

During the last moments of the contest, Jeremy Doku, a winger for City, made contact with Alexis Mac Allister using a forceful kick to the upper part of the body in the penalty area.

However, the on-field referee, Michael Oliver, did not grant the Liverpool team a penalty kick, and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), Stuart Attwell, concurred with this decision.

“It has generated a significant amount of divergent opinions, hasn’t it?” Webb stated.
