After Chelsea’s 3-2 victory over Newcastle United on Monday night, former Premier League midfielder Tim Sherwood criticized Cole Palmer and his Chelsea teammates harshly, putting the young player in an awkward situation.

Since leaving Manchester City for Chelsea last summer after a £40 million transfer, Palmer has been the team’s main goal threat. The attacking midfielder leads the Londoners in goals scored and assists this Premier League season with 19 goals in 23 appearances.

On Monday, he continued his recent form by setting up Nicolas Jackson’s first goal and scoring at the near post early in the second half. With a fantastic solo effort, Mykhaylo Mudryk ensured the points, negating the significance of goals from Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak.

Throughout the season, Chelsea’s lavishly assembled team has languished in the Premier League’s bottom half, earning manager Mauricio Pochettino and his players criticism from supporters and commentators.

In an odd post-match interview with Palmer, Sherwood also did not hold back when criticizing the Blues, telling him: “All you need is some players to play with.” Though I’m saying it, I know you’re not allowed to say that.

“I think [Pochettino] has to use your quality to build the team around you. But once he brings in the right players, hopefully, that will happen during a few transfer windows.”

Sherwood’s remarks caused Palmer to smile awkwardly, but he quickly jumped to the defense of his teammates, saying: “There is a lot of quality there – not just me.” Hopefully, the team can gel a little bit more than what has been observed because we have a ton of other excellent players.”

Despite having played one fewer game than Newcastle, the win moved Chelsea to within one point of the Magpies in tenth place. To secure his position at Stamford Bridge, Pochettino might need to have a successful season finale.

In the Carabao Cup final last month, the former Tottenham manager misspoke against an inexperienced Liverpool team. As a result, the Reds scored late in extra time to win the trophy.

Palmer is once again expected to play a significant role in Chelsea’s preparation for this weekend’s FA Cup quarterfinal matchup against Leicester City, so another deep run in the competition may be essential.
