In front of a raucous Anfield crowd, Liverpool legends faced off against a group of Ajax icons and pulled off a stunning comeback, marking the first time former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson managed the Reds.

In his Liverpool comeback, Fernando Torres scored as Sven-Goran Eriksson led the Reds to an incredible 4-2 comeback victory over Ajax.

In support of the Liverpool Foundation, the Spanish striker returned to Anfield as a team of Liverpool legends faced off against a group of legendary stars for the Dutch team. After expressing his desire to take over the team after receiving his cancer diagnosis, former England manager Eriksson was eventually granted the opportunity.

There were other legendary players who graced the Anfield field besides Torres. The Reds were led by Steven Gerrard and included Sami Hyypia, Daniel Agger, and Maxi Rodriguez.

Eriksson was seated on the bench next to legendary former forward Ian Rush, who received a warm reception from the sold-out Anfield crowd. Liverpool was not pleased with the start, even with the bright names on the team sheet.

Derk Boerrigter scored Ajax’s first goal in the first few minutes after Demy de Zeeuw’s low cross was intercepted. Torres headed onto the post from a corner, missing an opportunity to equalize.

Maxi Rodriguez, who saw a few opportunities saved, saw the hosts continue to have opportunities. Mere moments before halftime, Liverpool trailed 2-0 as a result of those wasted opportunities.

When Liverpool was unable to clear the ball, it ended up in the penalty area where Kiki Musampa was unmarked. He fired home after chesting the ball down.

Eriksson and Liverpool had a lot to consider after that second goal. During the break, a number of changes were made, one of which was the addition of cult hero Dirk Kuyt.

An additional replacement Liverpool was eventually given a lifeline by Gregory Vignal. A low cross from Rodriguez found him, and he slotted the ball into the corner.

Shortly after, Torres had the opportunity to equalize, but he mispronounced a line a few yards in front of the Kop. Kuyt’s spectacular attempt also went over the crossbar as Liverpool persisted in trying to equalize.

With the arrival of Djibril Cisse, who turned out to be a fantastic addition, the Reds did eventually get their wish. After Kuyt kept a free-kick alive at the back post, Cisse nodded to finish the play.

The forward from QPR and ex-Marseille then proved crucial once more. While on the ground, he was able to poke the ball to fellow substitute Nabil El Zhar. To give Liverpool the lead for the first time, the former Morocco international raced past the Ajax defense and fired home.

The Anfield crowd was desperate to see Torres score his goal after finally seeing their team take the lead, and with minutes remaining, it did. Mark Gonzalez’s low cross found its way to the former forward, who stretched just enough to get it over the line and into the post.

Both sets of players and Eriksson had the opportunity to bask in a round of applause from every corner of Anfield after the full-time whistle.
