Gary Neville was visibly ‘gobsmacked’ by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s reaction to £40,000 donation being cut for club legends
Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s response to a question regarding the club’s decision to cancel an annual £40,000 charity donation for club legends alarmed Gary Neville, who admitted that he was “alarmed.”
This week, the former Manchester United defender engaged in a conversation with Ratcliffe during which they discussed a variety of topics, including the club’s intentions to unveil a new stadium valued at £2 billion.
He also discussed United’s ongoing cost-cutting measures, including the decision to reduce an annual charity donation to The Association of Former Manchester United Players.
The Premier League club contributed £40,000 annually to a not-for-profit organisation that provided assistance to former players who were not compensated at a level comparable to those of the present for nearly four decades.
In December, United cut the scheme in response to staff redundancies and ticket-price hikes, despite the fact that the association was in contact with nearly 300 former players.
In his interview with Ratcliffe on The Overlap’s YouTube channel, Neville questioned the thought process behind such a significant decision and offered solutions. The decision sparked a massive amount of controversy.
“It is evident that £15 million was expended to eliminate Erik [ten Hag] and Dan [Ashworth], which are costly errors.” Neville initiated the conversation by stating that the former players association was deprived of £40,000. “Those are not the players who played under Sir Alex Ferguson or in the past decade; they are players from the 1960s and 1970s.”
“I am struck by the fact that it is £40,000 from players who are major supporters of United and are contributing significantly to the local community.”
“Why not consider the £40,000 and arrange a dinner for Harry Maguire and Bruno [Fernandes].” Sell 1,000 tickets for 30, 40, or 50 pounds, raise the funds through a dinner, and potentially conduct a raffle or auction. Distribute the funds to the former players in a manner that does not appear cruel, despite the fact that it is.
“Why would that not be regarded as a shopping list of items that includes health warnings?” They are former players who are involved in a variety of charitable endeavours. What is the rationale behind that decision?
Ratcliffe responded, “Well, nobody suggested that; I would have supported it,” after taking a moment to consider Neville’s argument.
Then Neville responded, “Well Jim, that alarms me, because if people aren’t suggesting that to you at the club,” before Ratcliffe added, “The people at the club, you know most of them.” They are not individuals who are cruel or callous. However, the cost is forty thousand dollars.
The discussion regarding cost-cutting has since gone viral on social media, with fans expressing their opinions on Ratcliffe’s response.
One individual wrote, “It is absurd to acknowledge that individuals who are compensated to devise innovative solutions and resolve problems are incapable of doing so.” The event truly caught me off guard; Gary was equally astounded.
A second individual stated, “This serves as evidence that the club is poorly managed,” while a third individual expressed, “This is quite significant.”
A fourth individual wrote, “Who on earth has INEOS employed at the club if none of them can come up with a better option than redundancies galore and taking funding away from ex-players, etc.?” Ratcliffe is either intentionally being deliberately obtuse or they are alarmingly stupid.
A fifth individual contributed: “I observed the entire event and also observed it.” You could also tell that it caught Jim off guard, as it actually made sense.
