“He just threw the towel in…” Because he’s a Manchester United star, Graeme Souness says, “He should be contributing, running around with enthusiasm, and helping his teammates.”

Graeme Souness used Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United, as an example of a modern captain who “tends to hide” when things get tough. The legendary Liverpool player doesn’t think the Portuguese talent will change, though.

Souness questioned Fernandes’ behaviour as captain on William Hill’s show Three Up Front. He especially didn’t like how emotional he gets when things don’t go his way or Manchester United’s.

Before last season, boss Erik ten Hag gave the 29-year-old the captaincy, taking over from Harry Maguire. But because the Red Devils had a rough start to the season, his leadership was soon called into question.

Souness said this about the 71-times-capped Portugal international: “Manchester United is one of the biggest football clubs in the world, and they have a leader in Sir Alex Ferguson.” Bruno Fernandes is the captain of the team.

“When they were down 3-0 to Liverpool a few years ago [that United went on to lose 7-0], he just gave up… He’s the leader! He should still be helpful by running around with a smile on his face and helping his teammates.

“I believe that leaders today tend to stay hidden. They don’t want to be blamed or put themselves out there.
