After finding out that they will lose two more points for violating PSR regulations, Everton dropped below Brentford in the Premier League standings, but they are still above the bottom three.

Sean Dyche’s team is still above the bottom three despite Everton’s new two-point deduction pushing them closer to the relegation zone.

The Toffees drop to 16th place in the standings as a result of their second penalty for violating the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, trading places with Brentford.

With a game remaining, they are still two points ahead of Sheffield United, eight ahead of Burnley, and eleven ahead of Sheffield Forest, who are currently in the basement.

On Monday morning, Everton received their punishment, which amounted to an eight-point deduction. After an appeal, the initial 10 points that were deducted for the PSR violation were lowered to just six.

For breaking the same rules, Forest has also been docked four points; however, this decision is appealable. Everton has already declared that they will file an appeal against the most recent penalties.

The club released the following statement: “The Premier League charged Everton in January 2024 for exceeding the allowed Profit and Sustainability thresholds for the assessment period ending in 2022–2023.

Everton will immediately forfeit two points after the Premier League Commission was tasked with reviewing the case. The Club has maintained that no additional sanctions were necessary, but it is happy that the Commission acknowledged most of the points the Club brought up, such as the idea of double punishment, the substantial mitigating circumstances brought about by the conflict in Ukraine, the high degree of cooperation, and the prompt admission of the Club’s violation.

“Everton is still dedicated to collaborating with the League on all PSR-related issues, but the disparities between commissions’ calculations of applied point deductions deeply worry us.

“The Club would like to officially thank the Fan Advisory Board, other fan organizations, and all Evertonians for their unwavering support and patience throughout this process.

“The Club and its legal representatives have begun the preparations to appeal the Commission’s decision.”

Premier League teams are only allowed to lose a maximum of £105 million over the course of three years. Everton has exceeded this limit for the past two seasons due to spiraling construction costs for their new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock.

The club contended that there were mitigating circumstances regarding their initial charge; however, the three-person panel overseeing the appeal lowered the original 10 point punishment, finding it to be excessive.

On Saturday, Dyche’s team defeated Burnley at home in a crucial victory. Next Monday, they travel to play Chelsea. On Sunday, April 21, they play another important match at Goodison Park against Forest, followed by a midweek Merseyside derby against title-chasing Liverpool.

After that, they play Sheffield United, Brentford, and Luton, three more teams that are vying for relegation, and finally, they play Arsenal, who are presently leading the Premier League.

There’s also always the chance that appeal decisions won’t be verified until after the season’s last game, which would completely disrupt things.
