When Jérémy Doku kicked Alexis Mac Allister in the final seconds of Liverpool’s match against Manchester City, the team was denied a penalty. Mike Dean and Gary Neville both agreed.

In Liverpool’s match against Manchester City, a late penalty was denied, and Gary Neville has questioned the decision. After his team was denied a chance to win three points, Jürgen Klopp spoke with the referee about it as well.

As the game was coming to an end, Jérémy Doku gave Alexis Mac Allister a kick to the chest and thigh as City was attempting to clear the ball from a corner. Despite the Argentine’s fall, play went on all around him until the ball was out of play.

Michael Oliver, the referee, opted not to call for a penalty. VAR Stuart Attwell did, however, examine the incident. The game finished in a 1-1 draw after he cleared Doku following his check.

But Neville was unconvinced. He insisted that Doku’s challenge should have resulted in a penalty before learning that Attwell had finished his check. The former Manchester United player went so far as to refer to the City player as a “lucky boy”.

“I fear Doku and he may be in danger. Doku may be in danger, in my opinion. Keep an eye on the actions that follow. I believe that’s… he’s finished writing the check. Neville stated as he provided commentary for Sky Sports, “I think he’s a lucky, lucky boy.”

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean concurred with Neville. Though he said the VAR could have asked Oliver to check the pitchside screen, he implied that Attwell believed Doku touched the ball.

“I believe he made contact with the ball, Doku, but his follow-through caught him squarely in the chest. I believe there might be a penalty. The VAR made a significant decision. Little touch on the ball, but he was caught on the ribcage by the follow through, Dean said to Sky Sports.

Stuart sending him to the screen wouldn’t surprise me. Check is finished. played the ball first and, I assume, followed through in the same manner as a typical coming together. I think that Doku is extremely, extremely fortunate for him.”

Oliver made some decisions that seemed to annoy Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. When the final whistle blew, Klopp rushed onto the field to confront the referee and his assistants before giving Pep Guardiola a hug.

With a gesture toward one of the penalty areas, Klopp was seen indicating to them. Following an impressive performance, Klopp withdrew after a few minutes to thank his players and their supporters.

A well-executed corner routine had seen John Stones give City the lead by tapping in Kevin De Bruyne’s cross at the near post. However, Ederson’s challenge of Darwin Núñez shortly after the half gave the Reds a penalty.

To score the equalizer, Mac Allister took the spot kick and fired it in. With a draw placing Liverpool second behind Arsenal on goal differential, the midfield player might have felt he should have had another with the final kick of the match.
