The Italian media have weighed in on Cesc Fabregas’ debut as Como manager, as the Spaniard faced his former boss Antonio Conte’s team against Napoli over the weekend. Como, which Fabregas co-owns with fellow Arsenal great Thierry Henry, was four points clear of the relegation zone going into the encounter.

Their opponents came into the game hoping to cut the gap on top, as Conte’s men, spearheaded by a resurgent Scott McTominay, battled tightly with defending champions Inter Milan. However, in one of the weekend’s upsets, the hosts won thanks to an Assane Diao winner. Following the success, various publications and experts commented on Fabregas’ managerial credentials.

Italian media applauds Fabregas’ brave decisions.
Despite being the underdogs, the ex-midfielder fought all out to win.

Following the three points that moved the I Lariani closer to safety, analyst Beppe Bergomi hailed the 37-year-old coach for his bold substitutions, which proved crucial in his team’s attempts to take all three points. According to Football Italia, the former Inter Milan man stated:

“Napoli had a good first half. Very good. The wingers were always playing high up the pitch, and there was a lot of pressure. Como changed something in the first 20 minutes of the second half; they became more aggressive. Napoli suffered.

“Fabregas was brave with substitutions because he introduced a striker for a midfield and scored at that moment.”

Journalist Tancredi Palmeri echoed the similar mood, praising Fabregas’ ability to deceive his former boss on Twitter.

“Fabregas takes the Master’s degree in front of maestro Conte,” Palmeri wrote on his page. “The incredible thing is that Napoli leads by a large margin (9 chances to 3), yet there is no similarity in terms of second-half play.

“Como constantly seeks victory and domination, Napoli is only counterattack.”

The triumph was one of numerous highs for the newly promoted club this season, following spectacular victories over Fiorentina and Roma.
