Liverpool owners FSG explore buying MLS club – Exclusive..
Football Insider has received information from sources indicating that Fenway Sports Group, the owners of Liverpool, is considering purchasing an MLS team.
The owners, who are based in the US, have previously stated that they hope to expand their ownership of the Premier League’s biggest clubs by creating a network of clubs.
It is known that FSG thinks there is a significant opening in the US market for an American team to adopt a European sporting philosophy.
Athleticism and data-driven expertise have historically been the MLS clubs’ strong points, but in terms of coaching and player development, they fall short of elite European clubs.
Having already invested in the Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Penguins, Liverpool, and Nascar’s RFK Racing, FSG is now seeking to acquire clubs in other areas and broaden their sports portfolio to include the MLS.
Denver Rapids are owned by Stan Kroenke’s holding company, which also owns Arsenal, and Man City, Liverpool’s Premier League rivals, are a part of the City Football Group investment portfolio.
Following the announcement that FSG and Michael Edwards have reached an agreement for Edwards to return to Liverpool in a football CEO role, there has been talk of a possible takeover deal.
The 44-year-old, who spent ten years with Liverpool before leaving in 2022, is scheduled to return in June to take charge of all football-related operations.
Enhancing FSG’s football club portfolio will be a priority, according to Edwards’ return statement, and he is already starting the process of establishing the first multi-club ownership agreement.
FSG may look into purchasing a majority stake in an MLS team, but minority investments up to £16 million ($20 million) are permitted under new regulations that go into effect in 2021.
Sportico claims that the MLS “hoped to make minority sales easier, allowing owners to access capital” when the new regulations were passed by the legislature.
Other news: following a breakthrough in negotiations, the new Liverpool chief’s arrival date was disclosed.
