With the Reds now poised to miss out on one target less than 24 hours later, Manchester United’s three-man midfield shortlist started floating around the transfer reports on Monday.

Among INEOS’ best choices to augment Erik ten Hag’s options in the middle of the park next season are Manuel Ugarte (Paris Saint-Germain), Adrien Rabiot (free agency) and Youssouf Fofana (Monaco).

But in the next days their choice will be limited to just two since Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport believes Fofana is now “virtually a[n AC] Milan player.”

Rossoneri chiefs quickly intensified their hunt after learning of United and Atletico Madrid’s interest yesterday to close a deal before any other suitors had a chance. While owner Gerry Cardinale dropped unannounced on Monday to meet club officials and take part in a Cincoro Tequila function, Fofana was already in Milan attending a friend’s wedding.

The article further states that the 25-year-old French international, judged a “magnificent” potential by talent scout Jacek Kulig, is set to sign a four-year contract in the next 48-72 hours; the update was published last night at 11pm.

Milan is currently negotiating the full conditions of the deal, including add-ons and bonuses; they will pay a set cost of £11.7 million.
