Man Utd fans have already made their minds up as club unveils design for new 100,000-seater stadium
Manchester United has revealed that they intend to construct a brand new stadium in the Old Trafford neighbourhood that will have a capacity of 100,000 people. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has stated that the stadium will be a “truly state-of-the-art stadium” that has the potential to be a “catalyst” for change.
At the headquarters of Foster + Partners in London, conceptual images and scaled models designed by the architect Lord Norman Foster were presented to the public on Tuesday morning.
According to the official website of Manchester United, the stadium and wider regeneration project has the potential to deliver an additional £7.3 billion per year to the economy of the United Kingdom. This would bring significant social and economic benefits to the community as well as the wider region.
Additionally, the plan suggests the possibility of the creation of 92,000 new jobs, the construction of more than 17,000 new homes, and an increase of 1.8 million visitors each year.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a co-owner of Manchester United, stated that “today marks the beginning of an extremely exciting journey to the delivery of what will be the world’s greatest football stadium, at the centre of a regenerated Old Trafford.”
“Over the course of the past 115 years, our current stadium has been of tremendous service to us; however, it has currently fallen behind the best arenas in the world of sports.
“We will be able to preserve the essence of Old Trafford by building next to the existing site,” said the architect. “At the same time, we will be able to create a truly state-of-the-art stadium that transforms the fan experience only footsteps away from our historic home.”
Ratcliffe continued by saying, “Just as important is the opportunity for a new stadium to be the catalyst for social and economic renewal of the Old Trafford area, creating jobs and investment not just during the construction phase but on a lasting basis when the stadium district is complete on a long-term basis.”
According to the Mail, United has proposed that the construction will be finished within five years. They claim that it will become the largest covered space in the world and feature their own version of Wembley Way. In terms of a timeline for the construction, United has proposed that it will be completed within five years.
Norman Foster, the architect who is responsible for the plans, provided additional information regarding the stadium that has a capacity of 100,000 people.
Foster stated that the stadium, which is orientated towards the outside, will serve as the beating heart of a new sustainable district that is entirely accessible by foot, is well served by public transportation, and is endowed by nature.
“It is a miniature city of the future that is a mixed-use development, and it is driving a new wave of growth and creating a global destination that the people of Manchester can be proud of.”
“Manchester United should always strive for the best in everything it does, both on and off the pitch, and that includes the stadium we play in,” said Sir Alex Ferguson. “This includes the stadium for our matches.”
There are a lot of memories that are particularly meaningful to me that are associated with Old Trafford; however, we need to have the courage to seize this opportunity to construct a new house that is suitable for the future and where new history can be made.
As a result of the initial plans, the following is how fans have responded on social media.
The first person commented, “It looks like a circus tent, which is quite appropriate for United,” while the second person wrote, “What on earth is that?”
In response, a third person said, “I believe that’s it for me. One of the most disgusting things I’ve ever witnessed.
A fourth person commented, “Lofty words – let’s see if it is constituted into action,” and a fifth person added, “They should have made that tent-looking piece the actual shape of the stadium; having it transparent makes it look even stranger.” The stadium is one of a kind, however.”
In February of the previous year, it was reported that INEOS were “leaning towards” a rebuild on land that was located on the side of the one that United currently resides on. In the meantime, Ratcliffe made a commitment to transform the ageing and deteriorating Old Trafford into a venue that is up to date with modern technology.
