After his final match as Sporting Lisbon manager on Sunday night in Braga, Amorim took a private aircraft from Portugal and landed at Carrington on Monday afternoon. After serving as caretaker manager for four games, he informed former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy that he was no longer needed.

At United, the team that was so successful at Sporting, Amorim will instead work alongside assistants Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido, and Emanuel Ferro, custodian coach Jorge Vital, and sports scientist Paulo Barreira.
