Mo Salah has made his feelings clear on AFCON as Jamie Carragher comment sparks row
Because of Jamie Carragher’s controversial comments about the Africa Cup of Nations, which caused outrage on the internet, Mohamed Salah has spoken out to reveal how he truly feels about the tournament.
On Sunday, Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah further solidified his position as the leading contender for the 2025 Ballon d’Or by claiming a goal and recording an assist during the team’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City, who are their most recent rivals.
Following the match, Carragher, a former Liverpool legend who has been involved in a number of altercations with Salah this season, made a controversial statement in which he suggested that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is not considered to be a major tournament.
The comments made by Carragher elicited a significant amount of criticism on the internet from fans as well as his peers, and Salah has already made it abundantly clear how he feels about the tournament.
Under Salah’s leadership, Egypt has competed in four African Cup of Nations tournaments, advancing to the finals of two of those tournaments in 2017 and again in 2021. However, they were defeated by Cameroon and Senegal on both occasions.
Egypt has won the tournament on seven separate occasions, with the most recent victory coming in 2010. Salah has acknowledged that winning the trophy with his countrymen is still one of his most important goals for his career that he hopes to accomplish.
When asked about his experience playing for Egypt at the African Cup of Nations in 2024, the Liverpool star admitted, “It’s a great feeling every time you step on the pitch with the national team jersey.”
Because of this, I cannot afford to take it for granted. I am simply content to be present and to be able to participate in the tournament.
“I want to come out on top in this competition. I would be overjoyed to be the winner.
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to begin in December, and Egypt is currently considered to be tied for second place with Algeria as the favourite to win the tournament. Morocco is considered to be the overall favourite to win the tournament.
Nevertheless, following Liverpool’s victory over Manchester City, Carragher asserted that the performances of Mohamed Salah in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) would most likely not be taken into consideration by fans when determining whether or not Salah is the best player in the world.
“I think the problem [is], the fact he’s with Egypt, and he’s probably not playing in the major tournament as such, or maybe not got a great chance of winning.” The assertion was made by Carragher.
In spite of this, the 32-year-old player continues to be the overwhelming favourite to pick up the Ballon d’Or in October. This is due to the fact that he has been performing exceptionally well for Liverpool this season.
