The club has announced that Francis Lee, a former player and chairman of Manchester City, has passed away at the age of 79 following a battle with cancer.

 

City has honored a person whom they consider to be a “club legend” in every aspect. Lee has played in 330 matches for City and has scored 148 goals.

 

 

The announcement was made expressing profound sorrow and a great sense of grief over the death of Francis Lee, a former Manchester City player and Chairman. The entire Manchester City community extends its heartfelt sympathies to the friends and family of Francis during this profoundly challenging period.

Lee succumbed to cancer in the early hours of Monday morning, following a protracted struggle with the disease. He is survived by his wife Gill and their children Charlotte, Jonny, and Nik. During his eight-year playing career with the club, he won the First Division title, FA Cup, League Cup, Cup Winners’ Cup, and two Charity Shields.

 

Lee became a member of City after leaving Bolton in 1967. Manager Joe Mercer paid ÂŁ60,000 to acquire his skills. He achieved the most number of goals in four consecutive seasons for the club, and successfully scored the penalty that secured their victory in the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970. The club defeated Polish club Gornik Zabrze 2-1 in the final, which took place in Vienna.

 

The forward represented England in the 1970 World Cup, where he achieved the distinction of becoming the first English player to be shown a card during the tournament. Following his triumphant tenure at City, he proceeded to secure the league championship with Derby County upon his arrival in 1974. He earned 27 caps while playing for the England national team, during which he scored a total of 10 goals.

 

Lee netted a total of 148 goals during his tenure of eight seasons with City(PA).
