The news of the Triple Sheffield Wednesday takeover is exhilarating, and Dejphon Chansiri’s upgrade is looming.

After months of uncertainty, Sheffield Wednesday fans are understandably excited that their club appears to have a brighter future following recent changes at Hillsborough.

While a club being placed into administration only adds to the doubt and worry of long-suffering supporters, those in the blue and white half of the Steel City are celebrating the fact that Dejphon Chansiri’s 10-year tenure as Owls chairman has come to an end, albeit in extremely bleak fashion.

After taking over for the late Milan Mandaric in 2015, Chansiri oversaw two seasons of promotion attempts back to the Premier League under Carlos Carvalhal. However, Wednesday’s situation has deteriorated significantly for a variety of reasons.

However, everyone involved with the club, whether as a player, non-player, or supporter, has expressed their feelings after a trio of Begbies Traynor administrators, including lifelong Wednesdayite Kris Wigfield, took temporary control of the club ahead of last Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Oxford United in S6.

Despite yet another defeat, Henrik Pedersen and his team witnessed firsthand the South Yorkshire side’s potential due to the size of its fanbase, which had just days before participated in a mass boycott of Hillsborough for the televised 1-0 defeat against high-flying Middlesbrough.

However, with Chansiri no longer in the picture, supporters may begin to envision a bright future for their team, beginning with a glance at the resumes of three high-profile bidders who want to assume control when they are legally permitted to do so.

The ownership links between John McEvoy, Mike Ashley, and John Textor should delight Sheffield Wednesday supporters.

It had previously been claimed that Chansiri sought £100 million to relinquish ownership before the club went into administration on October 24th, raising concerns about a winding-up petition.

According to the Telegraph, the current administrators are demanding £50 million and hope to hand over control to a new owner by the end of 2025, with John Textor, Mike Ashley, and John McEvoy presenting themselves as three of the most prominent parties interested in taking over.

According to recent reports, the EFL typically does not allow sales until at least 21 days after a club is placed into administration, therefore the earliest possible date for a Hillsborough takeover is November 14th.

Textor had previously revealed his ‘talks’ with Chansiri, amid claims that a sale could have cost as little as £70 million, with the former Crystal Palace and Lyon stakeholder looking to take full control of a club just months after being at the centre of a contentious UEFA ruling that resulted in the FA Cup winners being demoted to the UEFA Europa Conference League due to’multi-club ownership’ regulations.

Despite the issues, Textor has demonstrated success as Botafogo chairman, with the Brazilian club selected as one of five prospective winners of this year’s Ballon d’Or Men’s Club of the Year following participation in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Ashley is an even more well-known figure among English football fans, having gained his fortune through his Sports Direct clothing empire, which led to his purchase of Newcastle United for £134 million in September 2007.

It’s fair to say that some decisions made during his 14-year career at St James’ Park did not sit well with disillusioned fans, who protested his removal from the boardroom before selling to the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund four years ago.

Ashley’s persistent interest in sports business and rescuing historic teams was clear in his offer to buy Derby County in 2022, when the Rams were in exactly the same situation as Wednesday are now.

Meanwhile, despite having no previous experience owning a football club, McEvoy attempted to buy Coventry City in 2022, while also owning holdings in the NHL’s Nashville Predators and MLB’s Colorado Rockies.

Wednesdayites will also be intrigued by his off-pitch connection to the Steel City, since he owns a part in talent firm Various Artists Management, which is linked to Reverend and the Makers’ main singer and Hillsborough season-ticket holder Jon McClure.

Sheffield Wednesday will aim for stability regardless of the new ownership’s identity.

As previously stated, all three bidders face a number of advantages and disadvantages if their proposal is accepted by Begbies Traynor.

Regardless of who the new chairman or ownership group is, those on the terraces will want one thing above all else: stability.

Wednesday have long been at the center of controversy and instability, which resulted in two seasons in League One between 2021 and 2023 following an initial points deduction for violating EFL spending limits.

With a current 12-point deduction, the Owls are down six points after 12 games, making Henrik Pedersen’s goal of surviving the championship against all odds nearly impossible.

As a result, club officials and players want to use the following weeks and months to rebuild solid infrastructure and stability, allowing Wednesday to eventually end their 25-year absence from the Premier League.
