V¥deo: ‘Is this real?’ – Shocking moment as Riccardo Calafiori Snubbed Ben White handshake today in training as new Arsenal signing greets Mikel Arteta and gets round of applause from other team-mates in first meeting after £42m transfer
Arsenal has finalised the acquisition of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna, as Emile Smith Rowe leaves the Emirates Stadium.
Calafiori, aged 22, was identified as a top priority for the Gunners this season and they have successfully acquired him for a sum of £42 million.
Calafiori has agreed to a five-year contract at the Emirates Stadium after representing Italy in the Euro 2024 tournament.
“We extend a warm welcome to Riccardo and his family as they join Arsenal.” Manager Mikel Arteta remarked that the addition of this individual is excellent and provides significant reinforcement to our defence.
“Riccardo possesses a formidable personality and distinct abilities that will enhance our team’s capabilities as we strive to secure significant championships.”
“He has demonstrated significant growth in recent seasons through his performances for both Bologna and Italy, with his progress and development over the past year being truly remarkable.”
“We anticipate collaborating with Riccardo, incorporating him into the team, and providing him with assistance in the future.”
Calafiori, who is also capable of playing as a left-back, has been signed by Arsenal as their second significant addition of the summer. This comes after David Raya’s loan transfer from Brentford was made permanent. Calafiori will wear the number 33 shirt in his first season with the club.
Calafiori has already integrated with his new teammates on their tour of the United States and expressed that Arsenal is the ideal destination for him.
When questioned about his contributions to the club, he responded on Sky Sports News by stating, “Perhaps my mindset, as I possess a strong desire to achieve victory and I am eager to impart this attitude to the team.”
“I possess a strong sense of assurance when handling the ball, and I thoroughly enjoy participating in the game. This environment is ideal for me.”
Calafiori has joined the team, whereas Smith Rowe, who is an England international, has departed to play for Fulham, a rival team based in London.
The 24-year-old, who graduated from the Hale End academy, faced difficulties in establishing himself in the first-team due to several injuries that impeded his growth.
Smith Rowe had a limited role in the Premier League last season, playing in only 13 matches. According to the PA news agency, Fulham has agreed to a deal with a maximum value of £34 million. The deal includes an initial payment of £27 million, with the possibility of an additional £7 million in bonuses. This agreement sets a new record for Fulham in terms of transfer fees.
