During their time together at Everton, Wayne Rooney confessed to playing a hilarious joke on David Moyes.

When Moyes gave the England legend his big break in the Premier League in August 2002, he was a 16-year-old sensation. Shortly before turning seventeen, Rooney stunned Arsenal with a goal, solidifying his status as one of the game’s brightest prospects.

Moyes tried to prevent young Rooney from becoming too famous and to control his playing time, but the cheeky striker paid him back by dousing him in water after being encouraged by his teammates. Having been questioned about the incident by his former Manchester United and England teammate Gary Neville, it appears that Rooney has never acknowledged the prank before.

“Moyesy entered from the training field. Obviously, he had to have needed the restroom badly because he ran right into the first team dressing room, Rooney said on The Overlap, presented by SkyBet. “I got on the toilet right away and shut the door. I could see them all staring at me and filling the bucket, so I knew what was going on. “There you go,” they said. “For f*** sake,” is how I feel.”

“I went into the cubicle next to mine, stood on the toilet, and then whooshed out. I simply left there, ran out of there!”

Rooney’s joke might have hurt his chances of getting into Everton, but fortunately for him, Moyes was unaware that the teenager was responsible. When Ian Wright questioned Rooney about Moyes’ response, he said, “Mate, I was gone.” I completed it and left. I wasn’t hanging around hoping he would emerge.”

Rooney made a big impression for England during the 2004 Euros, and after that, he joined United for a whopping £27 million. Things with Moyes went south after his high-profile transfer to Old Trafford because of claims made in Rooney’s autobiography. Since then, Rooney and Moyes have reconciled. In 2013, Moyes succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson as United’s temporary manager.

Rooney said, “Moyesy was really good for me at Everton.” “I chastised him when I left the club because of my feelings at the time, and he sued me after I did.”

A few years after I departed, I got in touch with him and apologized, realizing that as one ages, one begins to understand the reasons behind his actions. For him to figure out, it was novel to have a player grabbing all those headlines.

“As a young manager at the time, he had never experienced it before. He was always there for me, and looking back, he was really good for me. He was attempting to prevent me from believing that I was superior to myself.”
