With their 3-2 victory over Freiburg on Sunday, Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen extended their winning streak across all competitions to 38 games.

As Alonso’s team gets closer to an unexpected championship victory, the outcome kept Leverkusen 10 points ahead of Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga standings. With eight games remaining, Leverkusen needs to win five more to secure the German league championship.

Leverkusen’s most recent victory occurred on Sunday during Liverpool’s 4-3 FA Cup loss at Manchester United. The Reds’ dreams of a historic quadruple came to an end at Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag’s team won the quarterfinal match thanks to a late goal from Amad Diallo in extra time.

The fact that legendary manager Jurgen Klopp resigned from Liverpool in the summer made their loss to their fierce rivals all the more painful. The Reds are still in the running for a treble, with the Premier League title race wide open and a trip to the Europa League quarterfinals against Atalanta assured. Despite this, the German will still end the season with a trophy after winning the Carabao Cup in February.
