Arsenal is targeting a dream winger known for being a “serial winner” and a better dribbler than Saka…
While Arsenal was still in the running for the title, they took another blow on Saturday when Brighton & Hove Albion tied the game at 1.
This was the first Premier League game since Kai Havertz joined the team that Mikel Arteta’s team didn’t have important players like Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, or Havertz. All three of them scored four or more goals for Arsenal last season. It was clear they weren’t there because the team had a hard time making clear scoring opportunities.
Arsenal scored 91 Premier League goals last season, which was their best total since the season they won the title in 1952–53.
They also made history when they scored five or more goals in six different away games in the same calendar year (2024), beating the marks held by Sunderland (1892) and Manchester City (1937).
But Arsenal has been held to zero or one goal in nine of their 20 league games this season, while league leaders Liverpool have only done that twice. This shows that they need more attackers, especially since Saka is out for “more than two months.”
Arsenal wants to sign a Bundesliga winger
Since Saka is hurt and Ethan Nwaneri, who scored against Brighton, is also out, Arsenal needs to get new players even more quickly this winter. Connor Humm of Football Insider says that the Gunners want to sign Kingsley Coman, a winger for Bayern Munich.
Coman is under contract with Bayern until June 2027 and is worth £28 million right now.
Coman’s status as a “serial winner” could make Arsenal’s team a lot stronger.
European football expert Zach Lowy pointed out that Coman won a league title in all 11 of his first professional seasons. He did this with Paris Saint-Germain twice, Juventus once, and Bayern Munich eight times. This could be very helpful for Arsenal as they try to win a trophy.
In Europe’s “big five” games, no player has won a title in all four. Arsenal fans hope that will change when Coman joins the team this month.
Any player Arsenal signs in January will have a hard time replacing Saka, but their playing styles are similar. FBRef’s “similar players” feature says that Saka and Coman are two of the most similar players in Europe’s top leagues.
Since August 2022, Saka has played twice as many minutes as Coman. He has scored more goals and set up more others, and his +9.2 goals minus expected goals (xG) number is very good. Arsenal probably won’t be able to find another player as good as Saka in January, but Coman’s stats show that he could still be a good addition.
Coman has completed almost half of the dribbles he has tried, which is very different from Gabriel Martinelli, whose recent play has been criticized.
Coman also has more progressive carries per 90 minutes than Saka, which could give Arsenal’s attack a new dimension. Coman has scored four goals in just 885 minutes of play this season, which could help Arsenal’s offensive options.
Even though Coman might not be Arteta’s first choice for the long term, he could still help if signed this month.
