Fabrizio Romano, a transfer analyst, “congratulated” Manchester United on defeating La Liga winners Real Madrid in the competition to recruit 18-year-old Leny Yoro.

Several European clubs were vying for the adolescent player after he made 32 appearances for Lille in Ligue Un in the 2023–2024 season.

Although Yoro was linked to a number of Premier League teams, it was generally believed that Real Madrid would be his most likely next stop.

But Man Utd overcame Real Madrid in the race to sign Yoro because the La Liga powerhouses were unwilling to shell out a substantial sum of money for a player who was about to reach his contract’s final year.

Yoro, on the other hand, joined the Premier League team for a reported £52 million after Man Utd made an aggressive move to secure a contract.

Romano has “congratulated” Man Utd on this “surprising” transaction, pointing out that until Yoro’s circumstances drastically improved, they only had a 30–35% chance of signing him.

“To be honest, it was surprising,” Romano admitted to Caught Offside.

Not in the closing stages, as I understood that Manchester United was entering the race strong and had a decent chance of winning ever since that Tuesday when they were able to agree on the amount with Lille. Not a 30–35% likelihood, but a decent one anyway.

But certainly, without a doubt, prior to that. In June, May, or April, I would have said without a doubt, “Real Madrid.” And if you questioned Leny Yoro at that time of year, I believe the answer would be without a doubt, Real Madrid. He was eager to join Real Madrid, he had a wonderful agreement with them, and his project there was ready.

Thus, it was genuinely unexpected. Congratulations to Man United as well, as their entry into the contest and ability to seal the deal in just ten days has been nothing short of amazing and positively astonishing.

Romano has also suggested that Real Madrid’s conceit was retaliated against since he felt that joining them was his “dream.”

Romano said, “Yoro wanted to fulfil his dream of playing for Real Madrid, but in the end, they didn’t want to pay the same amount of money invested by Manchester United.”

Thus, their successful tactic was to launch an attack on the club before trying to persuade the player, while Real Madrid was certain that Leny Yoro would wait for them until at least the next year, when his contract was set to end.

“So, yeah, it was surprising—not in the last few days, but in terms of the overall vibe of the transfer window, it was a really amazing and unexpected signing,” the speaker said.
