In light of the fact that Chelsea is supposedly in the process of acquiring Samu Omorodion from Atlético Madrid, we take a more in-depth look at the striker, who is twenty years old.

Over the course of the most of the 2023-24 season, Chelsea had a difficult time scoring goals.

A late-season improvement in form finally led to them outperforming their expected goals (xG) by 1.7 (77 goals from 75.3 xG), but it wasn’t always the case that goals came readily to them despite the fact that they had a better performance overall. At the beginning of February, the team coached by Mauricio Pochettino was performing poorly by 6.7 goals (36 goals from 42.7 in terms of goals scored).

Despite spending a substantial portion of the season in the bottom half of the table, Chelsea finished the season in a respectable sixth place thanks to their improvement in form. However, there was little doubt that Chelsea needed to look into the striker market before the summer arrived.

The previous summer, Nicolas Jackson was acquired from Villarreal. He had some promise by scoring 14 goals in 35 Premier League games, despite the fact that his xG total of 18.6 was lower than what he actually achieved.

The past few weeks have seen Chelsea being linked with moves for some of the best attackers in Europe, including Napoli’s Victor Osimhen. However, it appears that Chelsea has once again resorted to Spain in order to get a young player who possesses a lot of potential.

According to reports, Samu Omorodion is on the verge of joining the club from Atlético Madrid in a deal that is said to be worth approximately 35 million pounds. Conor Gallagher is also expected to leave the club in a transaction that is just as expensive. Following in Jackson’s footsteps, there will be optimism that Omorodion will be able to take the promise he demonstrated in La Liga and continue to develop on English soil.

Omorodion, who is 6-foot-4 in height, has never played for Atlético. He was signed in August of last year after scoring a goal for Granada against Diego Simeone’s team on Matchday 1 of the 2023-24 season. However, he was promptly loaned to Alavés after the signing.

The twenty-year-old player made his first 22 appearances for Alavés in La Liga, scoring eight goals. This was the third-highest tally for an Alavés player at that stage of the season in the tournament since the turn of the century.

Beyond the 10th of February, he did not find the back of the net again. He finished the season with eight goals in 34 games for Alavés, and nine goals in 35 games altogether in La Liga, counting his one goal and appearance for Granada on MD1. Despite the fact that this may not appear to be a significant number, Omorodion only started 22 of those games and scored an average of 0.4 goals per sixty minutes.

He had a performance that was 2.5 points lower than his xG, which indicates that there is unavoidable opportunity for development in a striker of his age.
