Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) punished David Coote after a video purportedly depicting the referee disparaging Liverpool went viral.

After a video of David Coote making disparaging comments about Liverpool surfaced, Jamie Carragher questioned Coote’s future as a Premier League referee. A voice criticising the team and former manager Jurgen Klopp can be heard in the video, which was posted online and swiftly went viral.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has placed Coote on temporary leave in the wake of the incident while they conduct an inquiry. Carragher gave his assessment of the controversial video during an appearance on the most recent Stick To Football show.

He emphasised how detrimental it was for Coote that the tape was released years after it was purportedly recorded. “People do stupid things,” Carragher said, referring to the fact that the tape was finally released four years after the lockdown. You wake up in the morning to erase it or anything after having a few beers.

“But for someone to keep that is just… I don’t see how he [Coote] can referee in England again after having a nightmare. Simply stop the recording when the [other] guy has finished speaking to the camera.

“How can he suddenly referee a rival? I don’t want that cancel culture, but I can’t even begin to understand what [Coote] is going through right now. Not only is he unable to officiate Liverpool, but how does he officiate Everton?

how many eyes you receive. When a referee renders a verdict and the entire fan base [is] arguing, it is what I hate most about social media. Furthermore, did people not believe that referees were in any way insulting to people? Following the release of the video and the accusations, Gary Neville said in the same episode that although the video alone should be punished, Coote shouldn’t lose his job as a result. According to Neville, “He [Coote] should get a suspension of some kind,”

“He will not be allowed to attend any Liverpool games. It is my hope that he will return to referee in the Premier League.

“I do not believe it is worthy of someone to be permanently barred from their position for calling someone a [c**t].” A sackable offence is not committed.

“If they do sack him, they’re then taking him off the employment list of everybody moving forward – and I don’t think that is right, but he needs punishing and he needs to understand the consequences.”
