Although he emphasized that both players were probably following Ruben Amorim’s instructions, former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves feels that Andre Onana is somewhat more to fault than Matthijs de Ligt for the careless goal given up against Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League.

After a lackluster first half, United fell down when former Derby County and Watford striker Matej Vydra scored after a pass from Onana to De Ligt was intercepted. Luckily for the Reds, the error did not cost them as Rasmus Hojlund, a replacement, scored twice to secure a crucial three-point victory.

“The team does not look to blame individuals after a mistake,” captain Bruno Fernandes said in his post-match interview, defending both Onana and De Ligt. Hargreaves, however, examined the subpar goal in greater detail in the TNT Sports studio.

“Rightly so he [Fernandes] is the captain and he should do that [defend his teammates],” the commentator stated. When a new manager takes over, you will follow their instructions because, believe me, you won’t play if you don’t.

“There will be an adjustment time because De Ligt is taking on a different role than perhaps [Erik] Ten Hag had. Onana most likely waited a moment, played a little bit on the incorrect side, and assumed De Ligt would approach him.

“I think both people are probably at fault, Onana a little bit more but again you are going to get teething problems with the change of style and different roles.” With two league games left, United’s victory in Czechia puts them in a strong position to automatically go to the round of 16.
