Newcastle’s unwillingness to let go of Dan Ashworth is allegedly impeding Manchester United’s plans for the summer transfer window. The 53-year-old told the northeast club in February that he planned to join United after being offered the position of sporting director by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and he has been on gardening leave ever since.

Before formally releasing him, Newcastle is requesting £20 million in compensation.

Ashworth’s St. James’ Park contract expires in June 2026, so if the parties are unable to come to an agreement, he may effectively be left in limbo for up to two years.

ESPN reports that United’s managers have acknowledged that their intended hiring process won’t proceed at “full speed” until Ashworth joins the team. And now the FA Cup winners are getting ready to hold off on hiring the former FA director of elite development until after the transfer window closes.

This idea will affect Ratcliffe’s intentions to restructure the first team roster this summer. Ashworth was expected to assist in managing transfer activity as the team was linked to several new players and to let go of several players who were thought to have underperformed in the 2023–2024 campaign.

Instead, when the window opens on June 14, technical director Jason Wilcox and director of football negotiations Matt Hargreaves will handle transfers. And with Jadon Sancho now out of his Borussia Dortmund loan, this will be one of the two’s first major decisions.

The 24-year-old Sancho has not participated in any United matches or even trained with the first team since his dramatic confrontation with manager Erik ten Hag in September. There is also conjecture regarding the Dutchman’s future because Ratcliffe has not publicly stated if he will remain with the company for the last year of his contract.

However, it now seems that Wilcox and Hargreaves will speak with the former England winger. Dortmund and Sancho are rumored to be eager for him to stay at the German team permanently after his second stint, but his weekly salary may present a challenge.

Sancho, whose contract with United expires in 2026, posted an emotional, if temporary, farewell message to Dortmund on social media on Monday. It came after he participated in the team’s 2-0 Champions League final loss to Real Madrid at Wembley on Saturday.

He posted on X, saying, “I want to thank everyone involved at such an amazing club.” “I sincerely appreciate how warmly you have all welcomed me back over the past six months.

“I’m grateful to Hans-Joachim Watzke, Edin Terzic, and Sebastian Kehl for their support and belief in me. And lastly, a particular thank you to BVB supporters. Your help is incredible, and I will always be grateful to you all.
