Despite the latest transfer news, Manchester United’s midfield may yet look rather different at the start of the following campaign.

Manuel Ugarte, a midfielder for Paris Saint-Germain, has been strongly linked to a summer transfer to Old Trafford. According to sources, United has withdrew from the competition to recruit the Uruguay international after the Ligue 1 club reportedly set an asking price of €60 million (£51 million).

The Athletic claims that Sander Berge of Burnley is one potential target that United may consider considering as a result. According to the article, Berge has been considered by the Reds as a backup option for defensive midfielder Ugarte. Youssouf Fofana of Monaco, Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad, and recently signed Joao Neves of PSG have all been linked to moves to Old Trafford in the past.

Erik ten Hag would have an additional significant option to have in the No. 6 slot for the upcoming season if Berge were to sign with United. If Berge stays in the defensive midfield position this season, Casemiro and the Brazilian would face off, of course.

There would be two midfield places left to fill with Berge in the No. 6 position. Being the captain of United, Bruno Fernandes is anticipated to start most of the team’s games barring an injury or suspension.

Kobbie Mainoo is expected to start for United this season after going from youth team prospect to first team standout the previous year. United may soon have one of the most gifted midfielders in the league on their hands if the England international’s growth follows a similar path this season.

Naturally, United has further options at their disposal to pair Berge in the centre of the park. Mason Mount’s position in the team is still up in the air, and other players like Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen might possibly come up.

It appears that United’s top priority going forward will be to bring in a new No. 6 as their next acquisition. It remains to be seen if Berge develops into that player, but his addition would undoubtedly provide Old Trafford’s midfield choices more valuable squad depth.
