Following Sunday’s lackluster 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town, Ruben Amorim identified Joshua Zirkzee and Jonny Evans as two Manchester United players that need to get better.

As United struggled to adjust to the expectations of the new head coach, they were held in Amorim’s first game as manager at Portman Road.

After just 80 seconds, Marcus Rashford struck home Amad’s cross to give the Portuguese tactician’s reign a perfect start.

However, Omari Hutchinson equalized before halftime as his long-range effort deflected off Noussair Mazraoui’s head, out of Andre Onana’s reach.

After taking Erik ten Hag’s place in the dugout, United flattered to lie in the second half, highlighting the difficulty of the task facing Amorim.

After full-time, he maintained that his players’ decision-making needed to improve and that the main problem was not the changeover to his own 3-4-3 style.

“You don’t need to coach them [that] at this level; decision-making is a concern,” Amorim said on Sky Sports.

“You must maintain possession of the ball and be aware of momentum in order to advance it. There are moments when you feel like you have to put the ball in front of you because you can’t keep it.

“There are other instances, such as when we were gathered around the box with two strikers at the conclusion of the game. Josh [Zirkzee] needs to realize that in order to assist the crosses, he must go to the box.

Therefore, we need to address the things we are doing that were not appropriate at the times. What we need to work on is our comprehension of the game, not the 3-4-3.

In his post-match evaluation, Amorim bemoaned his team’s pushing and mentioned a number of players, including Zirkzee. The 39-year-old also pointed out that Evans didn’t follow Hutchinson.

“It’s evident from the first half that [United] was a touch scared. [Morsy] was never by herself. We must attack him right away,” Amorim continued.

“Jonny Evans should be pressuring his man, but since we don’t have the training, Hutchinson was usually in the dead space.

On Thursday night, Amorim will play his second game at Old Trafford when Bodo and Glimt visit in the Europa League.

And despite joining United amid a tumultuous stretch of the season, he reiterated his appeal for patience.

Amorim went on: “We need to examine the data, comprehend the facts, and examine that. We must first comprehend the game.

“We have to be so much better physically to cope with the high pressure, the volume of the high-speed running, all these things, but we need time to work on these things.”
