Restoring “the principles, the identity and the character that we had in the past” is what Ruben Amorim wants Manchester United to do in his attempt to instill the same culture that Sir Alex Ferguson did at the club.

Since Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, Amorim has been the eighth manager. After 27 years on the Old Trafford touchline, the renowned Scot celebrated winning his 13th Premier League championship.

Just 11 games into the current season, United is now 13 points behind league leaders Liverpool, who are also led by a new manager in Arne Slot. United hasn’t won the league since that 2012–13 season.

After having to watch bitter rivals Manchester City and Liverpool outperform them over the last ten years, Amorim’s main goal in taking over the Red Devils is to return them to their former glory.

In an attempt to restore United to its former glory under Fergie, the Portuguese strategist is eager to establish a distinct identity.

“A lot of people now talk about the 3-4-3 and the 4-3-3 and all that stuff,” the new United manager told MUTV. However, in my opinion as a Manchester United player or teammate, it is more about the players’ personalities and perspectives of the squad than it is about the formation method.

Therefore, we must prioritise it over our play and pressing. For me right now, creating the values, identity, and character that we once have is the most crucial thing.

Working as a team will allow each person’s unique gift to flourish. However, the character, the way we battle, the way we play, and the necessity of having an identity are what make everything important.

“Our players will recognise the Manchester United team if they steal the shirt. Everyone is running back, playing, and having a good time. This is my motivation. I can state that winning is the popular thing.

Everyone wants to win, and I want to win with my players and the supporters, but my constant focus is on maintaining my identity and one idea. I want everyone to be together. Reaching the objectives will be lot simpler and more enjoyable.

At 39, Amorim is United’s youngest manager since 1969. He claims that after speaking with the club’s INEOS decision-makers, he is certain that the future holds promise.

He clarified: “I want to work with individuals I like and connect with, therefore it’s really important to me that I feel a connection with the people in the club.

“I believe that everyone is driven for success, and because you can be a part of something unique rather than just another, I feel like this is the place I want to be. And that’s something I truly enjoy.

“I must, of course, mention the names. Particularly Omar [Berrada], Dan [Ashworth], and Jason [Wilcox], but also Sir Jim [Ratcliffe] and Sir Dave [Brailsford]. I sensed that we were at the same place at the same time.

“In the exclusive club, we want to accomplish something unique. That, in my opinion, was a crucial aspect. You become thrilled when Manchester United talks to you about their plans, Omar.

“Being the first person selected to begin that route makes it a true privilege. It’s a big duty, then. However, you are thrilled and proud to be a part of that.

And we are aware that if the club performs well and wins games, everything appears to be much better, and people begin to have faith in the new stadium and innovative concepts.

We are aware that we are the football’s engine. In my view, Manchester United is the Premier League’s main motor.
