Ruud van Nistelrooy, the former interim head coach of Manchester United, has quickly become the front-runner for the Leicester City management post after Steve Cooper was fired. After only two wins in his 12-game stay, Leicester announced Cooper’s departure from the King Power Stadium on Sunday. The team decided to move on after Saturday’s defeat to Chelsea.

The new manager will take over a side that has lost four straight games and is presently 16th in the Premier League. Cooper is expected to be replaced by Van Nistelrooy, who recently had two victories over the Foxes during his interim tenure as United’s manager.

Van Nistelrooy was apparently considered for the Coventry City role, which is still open after Mark Robins was fired. Frank Lampard, the former manager of Chelsea and Everton, was also considered for the position and now seems to be the front-runner to lead the CBS Arena.

With a number of managers, particularly those at Crystal Palace, Wolves, and Southampton, under intense pressure, it has now been alleged that United icon Van Nistelrooy has been waiting for an opportunity to lead a top-flight team.

Van Nistelrooy is therefore likely to remain in England and seek to resume a full managing role, making him a potential candidate should City decide to replace Cooper with the Dutchman. Given that Leicester hosts the Reds on March 15th, Van Nistelrooy may rejoin United in that month.

A return to former team Hamburger SV, nevertheless, would also be possible. Sky Sports Germany claims that Van Nistelrooy has previously been discussed internally and is on the Bundesliga 2 team’s list of potential Steffen Baumgart successors. Ruben Amorim has been named the club’s new head coach after he left Old Trafford.

This past Sunday’s Premier League tie against Ipswich Town at Portman Road marked his debut game in charge.
