Breaking News: Southgate backs Palmer and explains what went wrong for Gallagher

Cole Palmer’s performance after being brought on for England during the goalless draw with Slovenia gave Gareth Southgate hope.

As a result of the outcome, Southgate’s team advanced to the Euro 2024 knockout stage as group champions, although they once again disappointed.

However, Palmer looked dangerous as soon as he entered the game, and Southgate, the England manager, will undoubtedly face pressure to start the Chelsea young player given the team’s recent poor results.

Palmer came on in the second half, while Kobbie Mainoo of Manchester United came on as a halftime substitute for Conor Gallagher, Palmer’s teammate at Chelsea.

Regarding Palmer, Southgate responded, “He demonstrated what he has been demonstrating in training.”

We had intended to include him and Kobbie in the game. They provide something unique.

“I believe the modifications we made improved the game.”

Considering England’s alternative choices, the choice to start Gallagher drew criticism.

“We felt we haven’t been winning the ball high enough up the pitch, so we wanted to press better,” Southgate said in his explanation of why he chose to start with Conor.

“He was ultimately receiving the ball a little bit deeper because we weren’t able to get his forward runs, where he can exploit opposition defences, during the game.”
