The Premier League’s fate remained largely uncertain despite Liverpool’s thrilling 1-1 draw with Manchester City thanks to a penalty kick from Alexis Mac Allister.

With a point apiece, Arsenal leads Jurgen Klopp’s team in the table on goal differential; however, they will face City in three weeks, with just one point separating them at the moment.

The midfielder from Argentina scored from the penalty spot to negate John Stones’ first goal in the Premier League since April.

Although this game served as a reminder that these two teams continue to be the standard bearers of the top flight, it was never likely to indicate who would win in the end.

It’s unclear if that will change when Jurgen Klopp leaves in the summer, but Pep Guardiola has yet to win in front of the Anfield faithful.

Still, he was the happier of the two managers when he left despite facing a lot of pressure in the second half.

Guardiola can count himself lucky because Jeremy Doku’s chest-high challenge on Mac Allister was not given a second spot kick by VAR in the closing seconds.

Even though Klopp will be happy with a point, he may have felt that there was a chance lost.

Following previous incidents en route to the ground, City changed their pre-match routine and arrived in mini-buses rather than by coach. Even Liverpool avoided the heavily congested Anfield Road, filled with the pungent smoke of flares, by coming around the back way.

One could divide the first half into three halves, with City dominating the first and last but failing to capitalize on their lead.

Caoimhin Kelleher saved an early effort from Kevin De Bruyne. Then, Conor Bradley, a young player, turned Nathan Ake and curled a low cross that narrowly escaped Darwin Nunez. Nunez’s tumbling header was flagged offside after he squared for Luis Diaz to tap into an empty net.

With a move right out of the training ground, City took the lead.

After Mac Allister was moved out of the way by Ake, De Bruyne’s deft low corner was driven into the near post and turned home by Stones.

Guardiola then acknowledged Carlos Vicens, the set-piece coach, for his contribution to the match.

After a blunder by Jarell Quansah, the one-on-one match that everyone was anticipating saw Virgil van Dijk backtracking against a charging Erling Haaland. However, the seasoned Dutchman maneuvered the striker onto his left foot, and Kelleher made a comfortable save.

Throughout, Van Dijk was dominant, controlling Haaland, and he continued to win challenges as he dispossessed Phil Foden when he was about to break. This continued well into the second half of added time.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s superior header and City’s superior control did not intimidate Liverpool in the slightest, and Luis Diaz had a chance to tie the score at halftime.

However, it only took them two minutes into the second half to draw even when Ake misdirected his backpass, allowing Nunez to slip past Ederson and send the Uruguayan striker skydiving.

Mac Allister lacked nerve to act on the spot for the second time in four days, and City’s punishment doubled when Ederson was forced off due to injury.

That gave Liverpool the opportunity to take the lead, but Diaz mishandled Nunez’s return pass, giving Stefan Ortega, Ederson’s replacement, all the room to beat.

Arriving on the hour, Mohammed Salah sliced open City’s defense with a brilliant pass, but Diaz blinked wide.

As the Colombian forward was about to pull the trigger eight yards out, Kyle Walker robbed him, ruining his afternoon.

After attempts from Salah and Mac Allister, and with the red tide showing no signs of abating, Guardiola substituted Mateo Kovacic for De Bruyne.
