3 EFL clubs that should have one eye on Steven Schumacher ft Cardiff City

Steven Schumacher breaks silence with 'hugely disappointing' swipe at Stoke City - Stoke-on-Trent Live

Steven Schumacher’s sacking on Monday morning could set in motion a huge change in the EFL in the coming weeks, as other clubs look at changing their managers.

The now former Stoke boss was relieved of his duties following the Potters’ 1-0 defeat to Oxford United on Saturday, their third loss in the Championship this season.

However, a large proportion of supporters at the bet365 Stadium are still confused as to why Schumacher was sacked after a promising summer.

Nevertheless, the conveyor belt of managerial jobs will bring about a new role for the 40-year-old very soon, and Football League World has taken a look at three clubs in the EFL who may take an interest in him.

Cardiff City have had a dismal start to the 2024/25 campaign, and are currently rock bottom of the Championship on just one point.

They’ve scored just once in their opening five matches, and a 1-0 defeat to Derby County on Saturday has put further pressure on Erol Bulut this week. The 49-year-old sent his assistant, Omer Riza, to complete media duties after the loss at Pride Park Stadium.

Results need to get better quickly for Bulut, who joined the Bluebirds last July, and Schumacher’s availability will only increase pressure on the Cardiff boss, who looks likely to be sacked ahead of this weekend’s fixture against Leeds United.

Schumacher has proven in his relatively short time in management already that he can work under a tight budget, a trait of the Bluebirds under Vincent Tan. Bulut has struggled to get the best out of the players that have been brought in, while seemingly isolating others.

Rubin Colwill is a fine example of a player who would excel under the guidance of Schumacher. The 22-year-old was Cardiff’s biggest threat against the Rams last Saturday, but has struggled for game-time under the current manager.

The former Stoke manager proved during his time with Plymouth Argyle his ability to develop young talent, with Morgan Whittaker coming on leaps and bounds since he first made the move to Home Park in 2022, and this is a skill that could be carried on if his former boss is hired in South Wales.

Bolton Wanderers’ start to the new League One campaign is showing all the signs of a hangover that has carried through from last season.

At the heart of the Trotters’ troubles has been Ian Evatt, who is facing huge pressure from supporters to change the club’s fortunes after winning just one of their first five League One matches.
