Clarence Seedorf Tells Viktor Gyokeres Exactly What He Thinks of Him to His Face
Arsenal defeated Atletico Madrid 4-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
During a post-match conversation after Arsenal’s Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid, Clarence Seedorf told Viktor Gyokeres just how he felt about his play.
Gyokeres ended his goal drought at the Emirates on Tuesday night, netting twice as Arsenal cruised to a 4-0 victory to retain their perfect European start.
The Swedish striker had not scored in his previous seven Arsenal starts – or nine overall if you include his two appearances for Sweden – but both goals against Atletico were trademark poacher finishes.
For an Arsenal team that has failed to convert chances in recent seasons, Gyokeres’ performance, who signed from Sporting CP this summer, was extremely encouraging.
He also received plaudits from Dutch icon and four-time Champions League winner Seedorf, who was a pundit for Amazon at the Emirates.
Seedorf replied, “I believe you created it, since everyone expects strikers to score.
“You didn’t score much during this era, but everything else you’ve done for the club and to improve players has resulted in this reaction from them.
“I believe the respect you have earned falls squarely on you. Very well done.
Gyokeres seems visibly happy to have added to his Arsenal goal count during his post-match interview.
He has now scored five goals for Arsenal, beginning with a brace against Leeds in August and adding another against Nottingham Forest.
However, Gyokeres has struggled against the Premier League’s elite clubs, failing to register a shot on goal at Old Trafford, Anfield, or St James’ Park.
Arsenal fans will be hoping that his brace against Atletico Madrid will serve as a catalyst for a more consistent scoring run.
Gyokeres stated, “It feels amazing; it’s been a while, but we’ve been winning games, so it’s been a great couple of months.”
“But of course, as a striker you want to score goals and to get two today is amazing.”
Gabby Logan then inquired about Gyokeres’ hesitation to celebrate his first goal, which can be seen in the video above from the 9-minute mark onward.
He said, “Yeah, but that was because of VAR; I’m not sure, it may be something.
“I just wanted to wait and not do too much and be disappointed, so I just waited.”
Despite Gyokeres’ inconsistent performances in front of goal, Arsenal have had a strong start to the season.
After eight Premier League games, they are three points clear at the top, have advanced to the Carabao Cup fourth round, and are joint-top in the Champions League.
Mikel Arteta’s side has placed second in each of the last three seasons, but they are hoping that Gyokeres’ £63.5 million acquisition will help them win their first league title in over 20 years.
Arsenal return to Premier League play on Sunday, October 26, when they host Crystal Palace, who are in form.
