Diego Simeone Makes Huge Claim After Facing Arsenal, Liverpool and Real Madrid This Season
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has made a bold claim after his team has already faced Arsenal, Liverpool, and Real Madrid in the 2025/26 season. The Rojiblancos are typically set up in such a way that they rarely lose by large margins, and neutrals are well aware of their power in tournament forms – a team built on a deadly effective smash-and-grab approach.
That was not the case in north London on Tuesday night, as Mikel Arteta’s in-form Arsenal team found a way to kick the door of a well-drilled defence off its hinges and cruise to a 4-0 win. The score remained 0-0 at halftime, but the Gunners broke the deadlock in the second half with four goals in 13 minutes.
Gabriel climbed highest from a corner to start the scoring in all-too-familiar way around the hour mark, Gabriel Martinelli swiftly doubled the lead, and Viktor Gyokeres scored again to complete a statement triumph under the lights at Emirates Stadium. It was the type of performance that would have sent shivers down the spines of the rest of Europe.

But perhaps what will serve as the real wake-up call to Arsenal’s developing power this week is Simeone’s admission that, aside from themselves, Real Madrid, and Liverpool, he believes Arteta and co. are the finest team Atletico Madrid has faced this season. He informed Amazon Prime:
“I believe they are the best squad we have faced this season. They compete extremely well, their players run endlessly, and they have talent all over the pitch. They deserved to win tonight, and I congratulate them. It’s a learning curve. We simply need to keep improving. I think we competed well to begin with. “They were the better team after 60 minutes and deserved to win.”
The Argentine manager, who is one of the longest-serving in Europe’s top ten divisions, added: “We have to put this behind us now, and we need to focus on training on the things that went right, as well as making improvements.”
Atletico defender David Hancko praised Arsenal, telling UEFA: “It was a very tough game. This is to be expected given that they are now one of the finest teams in the world.
Arsenal appear to have come a long way since Arteta’s appointment in 2019, with their mentality and knowledge improving by leaps and bounds over the last six years. They are now a team capable of giving masterclasses to their opponents, and their expanding squad depth should serve as a warning to any team they meet this season as the stars align to translate those important attributes into tangible success.
Arsenal’s consistency in going deep in every competition they enter these days is worth keeping an eye on, but now all eyes are on whether they can finally get over the line – ending a two-decade wait for the Premier League title and capturing that elusive first Champions League crown, with their next fixtures against Crystal Palace and Slavia Prague, respectively.
