Arsenal dominated Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen 4-1 on Wednesday night in their penultimate preseason friendly of the summer.

The Arsenal supporters quickly received a reminder of their team’s strength. By the time they were celebrating the Gunners’ second goal in the first ten minutes, most had hardly even settled in.

Leandro Trossard quickly increased Arsenal’s lead after a high recapture and deft movement in the Leverkusen box. Oleksandr Zinchenko had given the hosts the lead with a precise shot from the edge of the area.

In the aftermath, the match did settle, but Arsenal was determined to give their guests every inch. Unusually careless play by Xabi Alonso’s team allowed the formidable Gabriel Jesus to take advantage of an erroneous throw to increase the Gunners’ lead just before halftime.

We’ve been used to Arteta’s team’s excellent summertime first-half performances against Premier League opponents. They were enormous when it came to possession and unrelenting in their attempts to get behind a shaky Leverkusen defence.

After Mikel Arteta made the first changes to open the second half, Kai Havertz scored the next goal, giving Leverkusen greater control. Granit Xhaka’s attempted clearance was converted by the German because he was in the right location at the right moment.

Though it was only a consolation, former Gunner Nathan Tella broke in behind and squared up to fellow replacement Adam Hlozek, so it wasn’t the ideal game for Arteta’s team as they failed to maintain a clean sheet. Nevertheless, Arteta had something to be happy with given the first half performance, effective final third showing, and comfort level displayed by several of Arsenal’s young players.

The Arsenal player ratings from their preseason victory on Wednesday are shown below.

Bayer Leverkusen 4-1 Arsenal player ratings

David Raya (GK): 6.5/10 – Raya did not record a clean sheet, needing to make his first stop in the 44th minute. Raya took the initiative right away and was quick to get off the mark.

William Saliba (CCB): 6.5 out of 10. When Saliba is on the pitch, the team just seems to play with a little bit more zip. The Frenchman completed 45 minutes on Wednesday.

Gabriel (CB): 7/10 – There was no way this Brazilian was going to handle this like a friendly. Gabriel was using both boxes to the fullest. Sometimes loose when carrying.

7/10 for Oleksandr Zinchenko (LB) That #17 shirt might have some power in it. Zinchenko had a great finish to open the evening and showed quick reflexes when he had to defend down his wing. pulled during the interval.
