According to The Athletic, Manchester United is reportedly thinking of making an unexpected move this summer to sign Burnley star Sander Berge.

The Red Devils first expressed interest in Manuel Ugarte of Paris Saint-Germain during this transfer window, and it is rumoured that they are eager to add a new defensive midfield player.

Even if they came to personal terms with the player, Erik ten Hag’s team is unwilling to meet PSG’s asking price in order to sign the South American, as the French powerhouses are reportedly seeking a sum of approximately £51 million.

According to reports, United has opted to give up on Ugarte after failing to reach a transfer fee agreement with Les Parisiens. With Berge emerging as a viable option, Man Utd now appear to be focussing on other possibilities.

The Athletic reports that the Red Devils have already gotten in touch with the Norwegian’s representatives and are thinking about signing him.

The report further states that, should Man Utd go with this deal, Burnley would be willing to pay in on the 26-year-old in order to get his signature.

Berge, who Transfermarkt values at approximately £17 million, has three years remaining on his current Clarets contract, but if they are relegated this summer, they may be obliged to sell the midfield player for a low price.

Despite Burnley’s difficulties in the Premier League the previous season, the 26-year-old showed flashes of his brilliance; if this leads to a chance to play for a team of United’s calibre, that would be a dream transfer for him.

It has been stated, though, that United has other choices on its want list in addition to Berge, including Joao Gomes, Youssouf Fofana, and Martin Zubimendi.
