“I haven’t done such to anybody before but Arteta does this to everyone…The FA should do something about it urgently”: Pep Guardiola angered by Arsenal over an agreement to sign his major transfer target as he urged FA to look into the matter urgently
The likelihood that Arsenal will sign Viktor Gyokeres has significantly increased. In an attempt to strengthen his front line, Mikel Arteta has been extensively linked to a summer transfer to the Emirates Stadium, involving the 26-year-old striker.
Gyokeres plays 33 times for Sporting CP in the Portuguese first division this season, with 29 goals and nine assists. His contract at the Jose Alvalade Stadium expires in June 2028. The Sweden international was instrumental in helping Ruben Amorim’s team win the Primeira Liga.
Gyokeres’ outstanding exploits did not go unnoticed; in March, football.london revealed that Arsenal was keeping a close eye on him. Although the north Londoners would be keen to recruit him, his €100 million (£84 million) release clause might prove to be a roadblock.
Sporting, however, has recently made the clearest indication to yet that the Swede might be offloaded this summer after compensating Coventry City to lower their sell-on clause. As per an agreement with the Portuguese club, the Sky Blues’ sell-on clause for Gyokeres has been decreased by five percent, according to the Portuguese publication Bola Na Rede.
According to the report, Sporting has given Coventry City €1 million (£843k) in addition to the striker meeting “certain objectives” during the campaign. It’s rumoured that, should Gyokeres be sold, the Championship team was initially entitled to fifteen percent of any profits from the initial money the Portuguese club paid for him last summer.
Counting the add-ons since 2023, Coventry City has made almost £2.5 million on the €20 million (£17.5 million) upfront fee. Sporting will now be entitled to a larger share of any prospective fee, which may cause them to play it more casual in talks with teams like Arsenal because they won’t have to pay the Sky Blues as much.
Speaking to reporters prior to Arsenal’s Thursday night preseason friendly against Liverpool, Arteta was questioned about his plans for the remaining transfer window following his acquisition of Riccardo Calafiori. “Let’s see,” the Spaniard remarked.
“We must wait and observe how the market moves. The areas in which we can improve have already been determined. We convened in the months of February, March, and April. Thus, we shall try to make the squad stronger. I’m pretty pleased with what we have thus far.
Then, Arteta said, “We don’t expect to do anything like it,” in response to the question of whether Arsenal will “spend big money” like they did on Declan Rice the previous season. That is the actual situation.
