Jurgen Klopp said, “I have to admit that Arteta was a really close friend of mine, and I wish the best for him. The only guy from Arsenal who needs to depart in order for Arteta to succeed this season is him.

In the latest—and last—turn in the Arsenal transfer saga, Eddie Nketiah will not be joining Marseille after the French team decided to acquire a different striker.

Since Nketiah was recognised by their new manager Roberto de Zerbi as a quality complement to his forward line, Marseille has been connected to the player for a number of weeks. After assisting Marseille in acquiring Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Mason Greenwood from the Premier League, De Zerbi sought to complete a hat-trick by securing Nketiah’s transfer.

According to French reports, Marseille was able to come to a “personal agreement” with the center-forward. They then started formal transfer negotiations with Mikel Arteta and Edu, the chiefs of Arsenal.

De Zerbi’s team was quickly turned off by Arsenal’s demands for £40 million. However, it wasn’t long until Edu reduced Nketiah’s asking price, giving the potential trade new life.

Nketiah, though, is not going to Marseille this summer after suffering a severe injury. Reliable French writer Fabrice Hawkins claims that Marseille has focused on Elye Wahi and has moved rapidly to close a deal for the Lens ace.

Wahi will cost Marseille an initial €25 million (£21.3 million) in addition to an additional €5 million (£4.3 million) in possible bonuses.

According to Hawkins, Nketiah’s chances of joining the Ligue 1 team would be dashed by Wahi’s arrival at Marseille, which is anticipated to be confirmed in the next few days.

Arsenal would also be disappointed by Wahi’s sale because they were hoping to get rid of Nketiah in order to free up more money for transfers.

As Nketiah is an Arsenal academy alum, his sale would have been recorded on the team’s books as pure profit, similar to the initial £27 million earned upon Emile Smith Rowe’s move to Fulham.

But Nketiah should still be allowed to leave Arsenal’s roster soon enough. Despite his advanced age of 25, he still has plenty of good years ahead of him. He also has a respectable goal scoring record.

Due to these circumstances, it is expected that during the next few weeks, a number of clubs will get in touch with the Gunners regarding the Englishman. West Ham United, Everton, and Crystal Palace are just a few of the Premier League teams that have previously been connected to him.

Arsenal had hoped to finance their raid for Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino with the money made from Nketiah’s departure. However, Nketiah will now be residing at the Emirates for a little while longer as Sociedad works to stop Merino from leaving.
