The 2024–25 season is just a few days away from beginning, and Manchester United will play Fulham in the season opener.

This also means that preseason predictions are due, and not many pundits are prepared to take a risk and believe that Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United will have a successful season.

Just three of the nine analysts, including former players, surveyed by the Premier League for their predictions for 2024–2025 supported Manchester United’s chances of finishing in the top four.

After United’s miserable eighth-place result in the previous season, this is not entirely surprising. Although there have been some changes to the squad, injuries continue to be a problem, especially at left defence where Luke Shaw is expected to miss the opening few weeks.

With so many good players in the squad, Manchester United can still produce impressive wins; they just need to be more consistent.

Several analysts were asked to provide brief assessments of the players to watch this season while speaking to the Premier League.

Former Manchester United attacker Michael Owen gave a simple response when asked about the most intriguing summer acquisition: “Joshua Zirkzee.”

Zirkzee became the first of four Manchester United recruits thus far, joining in July from Bologna. The other three are Leny Yoro, Matthjis de Ligt, and Noussair Mazraoui.

Erik ten Hag thinks Zirkzee will provide a new dimension to United’s attack, and Owen is obviously just as curious about what the player can accomplish on his own as many United supporters are.

When asked to choose “the best young player” for the upcoming season, Owen supported yet another Manchester United player.

In response, he said, “Kobbie Mainoo,” expressing his respect for the brilliant midfield player who shone at Euro 2024.

Mainoo received three of the seven votes, echoing the choice of two other pundits. Oscar Bobb, Cole Palmer, and Adam Wharton were also nominated.

Owen is not entirely convinced about United’s chances.
Manchester United was not mentioned by Michael Owen as a team he believes will place among the top four.

He thinks that, similar to previous season, Arsenal, Manchester City, Aston Villa, and Liverpool will be in the Champions League.

However, Manchester United has a great chance to put together a good 2024–25 season and have a far better campaign than the difficult one we had last year if Zirkzee and Mainoo can have the kinds of seasons he expects them to.
