Harry Redknapp discloses superstition that keeps him from seeing Frank Lampard’s Coventry City.
Harry Redknapp, who memorably led Portsmouth to Premier League promotion and the FA Cup, has revealed a strange superstition about watching Coventry City, which is currently managed by his nephew, Frank Lampard.

The former Pompey manager has stated that he is purposely avoided attending any Coventry games this season for fear of jinxing their outstanding form. Lampard’s side has made a flying start to the Championship season, collecting 22 points from their first ten games and sitting one point ahead of Middlesbrough at the top of the league.

While the 47-year-old Lampard hopes to imitate his uncle’s success — Redknapp has already gained promotion with both Portsmouth and QPR — his famous relative claims he is pleased to cheer him on from afar for the time being.

Speaking with Coventry Live, Redknapp confessed:

“I always look at Coventry’s results first. I’ve been hesitant to go to a game because I’m afraid that if I show up and they lose, I’ll be the bad luck charm. So, while they’re winning, I’ll stay away. I’m ready to go, but I hope it’s a long time before I do—that means they keep winning. I watch every game on television, and I kick every ball for him. He deserves all of the success he is experiencing.”

Redknapp went on to praise Lampard’s achievements since taking over at the Coventry Building Society Arena, highlighting the team’s sustained growth despite scant transfer market activity.

“They’ve had a great start. Last season, they were unlucky not to make the playoffs – they were the superior team against Sunderland, and that final kick of the game cost them their chance. This year, Frank’s kept up the good work without making significant adjustments. He has been faithful to the same set of players and is getting the most out of them. He’s doing an excellent job.

The veteran manager also praised Lampard’s passion and professionalism, citing the midfielder’s relentless work ethic throughout his playing days.

“He was the best professional I’ve ever seen in all my years in football,” Redknapp told the newspaper. “No one matched him in terms of attitude and commitment. He’d still be out on the practice pitch at four o’clock in the afternoon, long after everyone else had gone home, simply practising and running on his own every day. “His discipline was unbelievable.”

As Coventry prepare to face Portsmouth at Fratton Park, Redknapp reveals he will once again be watching from afar, anxious to see his nephew continue his fine run but fearful of tempting fate by turning up in person.
