‘I won’t sign that gay c**p’ – Germany international disciplined after homophobic outburst
Josh Cavallo made it quite obvious that he was incensed by the fact that a Germany striker replied with a homophobic comment while refusing to sign a special edition rainbow shirt during an autograph collection session.
In response to Kevin Behrens’ homophobic remarks and his refusal to sign a shirt that had a rainbow badge, his club, Wolfsburg, has taken disciplinary action against him. Behrens is a member of the German national team.
Although Behrens had previously worked at Union Berlin for three years, he did not begin his tenure at Wolfsburg until January. As a result of his outstanding performance, he was selected for the Germany national team at the beginning of the previous season.
After coming in as a replacement for Jamal Musiala during a match against the United States that ended in a 2–2 tie, he was awarded his first cap in October of last year. On the other hand, the 33-year-old has now sparked outrage as it has been said that he made a homophobic remark while he was doing an autograph session.
The event was also attended by members of the staff as well as other participating players. In order to show their support for the LGBTQ+ community, the marketing team of Wolfsburg invited Behrens to autograph a limited-edition Wolfsburg shirt that included a rainbow design.Prior to reportedly saying, “I won’t sign that gay c**p,” Behrens responded to the request by repeatedly declining to comply with it. The outburst is believed to have “caused horror” among the staff members, and Wolfsburg has acknowledged that they have penalized the striker inside the organization.
According to a statement released by the club, “there were statements made during an internal meeting that were not in line with the stance that VfL Wolfsburg has taken.” Instantaneously, the matter was dealt with inside the organization. The German football club VfL Wolfsburg emphasizes that it is conscious of its social duty.
A number of essential principles, including respect, honesty, and openness, have always been deeply rooted in the club’s ideology. The club and its staff are committed to promoting diversity and tolerance.Nevertheless, although there have been reports from a few sites that Behrens was suspended, this is not the case. A spokeswoman for Wolfsburg gave the following statement to Outsports: “He is still participating in the training sessions.” Generally speaking, we do not comment on the punishments that players receive as a club.
For the past two seasons, Wolfsburg captain Maximilian Arnold has worn a rainbow captain’s armband in every single match, regardless of whether it was played at home or away. Although he felt that Behrens’ acts were reprehensible, he also insisted that he should be given another opportunity.
Arnold shared with Kicker that Kevin had shown regret over something that was unquestionably not to his liking. “But it’s true that everyone makes errors. It is quite evident that something like to this should never occur again, but it is also true that everyone deserves a second opportunity.
Josh Cavallo, who was the first player in the top division of football to come out as gay, expressed his unhappiness with the acts of Behrens through his comments. ‘We adore homosexual s***’ was the description of a photo that Cavallo responded to, which was posted by St. Pauli, a Bundesliga team. The post included a rainbow armband.
The response from Cavallo read, “Best thing I’ve ever seen,” and the Australian included an emoji of a happy face with heart-eyes. This season, Behrens has made three appearances for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. He has taken responsibility for his actions and issued an apology.
According to what he claimed, “My impromptu remarks were not acceptable in any way.” My sincere apologies are extended to you for that. There was a clear discussion about the matter within the company, and I would appreciate it if you could understand that I do not desire to speak any further on it.
