Jurgen Klopp Drops Liverpool Return Hint as Arne Slot Suffers Another Loss

Jurgen Klopp says he hasn’t ruled out a future return to Liverpool in any capacity.

Klopp left Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season, following nearly nine years in command.

The German admitted that he was ‘running out of energy’ and had no immediate plans to return to club or international management.

Klopp has kept his word, taking on the role of worldwide head of football for Red Bull rather than accepting another managerial position.

Liverpool won the Premier League last season and advanced to the Carabao Cup final under his replacement, Arne Slot.

Despite investing heavily in the summer transfer window, the Reds have struggled this season.

Around £400 million was spent on new players, including a British club record fee of around £125 million to recruit Alexander Isak from Newcastle.

Almost half of that investment was recouped through player sales, but fresh additions have yet to have a substantial impact.

Liverpool has now lost four games in a row in all competitions, including Sunday’s 2-1 loss to arch rivals Manchester United at Anfield.

Slot is not currently under pressure at Liverpool, but this might change if things do not improve in the coming months.

Klopp went on the ‘Diary of a CEO’ podcast with Steven Bartlett on Monday (filmed before to the United defeat) and indicated that he could ‘theoretically’ return to Liverpool in the future if the club sought him – but dismissed the idea that it would happen anytime soon.

“I said I will never coach a different team in England,” Klopp recounted. “That means, if it’s Liverpool, yes. Theoretically. I’m not even sure [what it would take to return]. I enjoy what I’m doing right now.

“I do not miss coaching. I do not. I coach, but it’s not the same. Not players. I do not miss standing in the rain for two and a half to three hours. I don’t miss attending three press conferences per week. Having 10–12 injuries per week. Who misses that? I do not.

“I don’t miss being in the dressing room since it wasn’t something I did all that often. I coached 1,080-something games, so I was in the locker room a lot.

“Do I need to decide today that I will not coach again? Thank God I don’t have to do that; I can see what the future holds.

“I like what I am doing right now. And I believe that only if I am completely focused on it will I be able to perform well.

“Sometimes I miss people. I don’t miss the dressing room as such, but sitting in the restaurant and talking with the players was enjoyable. That was always pleasant. Standing there, I can hear them laughing. For example, I can always hear Virgil [van Dijk] laughing in my ear.

“Do I miss it in general around football players? Actually, not just now. I’m still in the business that I’m most familiar with. So I don’t miss the football portion because I already have it.
