Manchester United may anticipate a substantial financial gain due to former forward Mason Greenwood, whom they transferred to Ligue 1 club Marseille last summer.

Mason Greenwood may no longer be a Manchester United player, although he could still provide substantial revenue for the club in the foreseeable future.

The 23-year-old transferred to Marseille last summer for £25.6 million, concluding his 17-year affiliation with the Red Devils. He has maintained exceptional form, scoring 11 goals in 17 appearances in all competitions for the Ligue 1 team this season.

Although United may have permanently severed ties with the forward, it is in their best interest that he maintains his performance in France. This is due to the substantial sell-on clause negotiated with Marseille during last year’s transfer discussions. TBR Football reports that the clause may reach 50 percent, indicating that United might receive millions if Greenwood transfers to another team.

Last month, it was asserted that Greenwood’s exploits had garnered interest from Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, and Barcelona, who have been monitoring the Englishman for an extended period. A bid of approximately £60 million is believed to be sufficient to acquire Greenwood’s services, resulting in United receiving around £30 million.

The authorities at Old Trafford would certainly embrace such an agreement, considering minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s fiscal prudence since assuming control of all football operations at the club last year. New manager Ruben Amorim is likely eager to acquire new players to shape the squad according to his vision; but, due to financial constraints, transfer ambitions have apparently been curtailed.

A significant transfer for Sporting CP’s standout Viktor Gyokeres is anticipated; but, recent speculations connecting United to a loan acquisition of PSG’s Randal Kolo Muani indicate that the Swedish player may exceed their financial capacity—at least for this month. Ultimately, his release clause is set at £83 million, and with teams like as Bayern Munich, PSG, and Arsenal pursuing him, it is highly probable that his price might exceed that amount.

A potential transfer for Victor Osimhen, presently on loan from Napoli to Galatasaray, has been suggested. The Nigerian has been scoring prolifically in Turkey; however, a break provision in his loan agreement permits him to transfer to another club if Napoli receives a satisfactory offer.

Amorim is allegedly eager to acquire one or two wing-backs this month. The role is crucial in his 3-4-3 formation, and it is a segment of the team where United now exhibit notable deficiencies.

Marseille’s sale of Greenwood, who was on loan from United to La Liga club Getafe last season, would allocate further finances for the Portuguese coach; however, there is no assurance that this will occur in the near future. Marseille is currently performing really well in Ligue 1, occupying the position directly below the leaders, PSG.

Greenwood has been pivotal to their recent success, and a mid-season exit would be detrimental for the team, which is eager to recover and secure a Champions League position after finishing eighth—its poorest domestic showing in nearly a decade—in the 2023/24 season. However, should his exceptional performance persist, the French club may possess limited influence over the situation.
