Matthijs de Ligt expresses his thoughts as he journeys to the United Kingdom to finalise his transfer to Manchester United.
Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, defenders from Bayern Munich, departed the nation on Monday morning to ensure their timely transfer to Manchester United for the commencement of the next Premier League season.

United has reached an agreement with Bayern to pay an initial transfer fee of €45 million (£38.5 million) for De Ligt, along with a further €5 million (£4.2 million) in subsequent payments.

Mazraoui’s €20 million (£17.1 million) agreement has already been finalised, indicating that De Ligt will have another player from Bayern Munich joining him at Old Trafford.

Prior to departing for Manchester on Monday morning, De Ligt and Mazraoui were observed at the Munich airport. De Ligt said Sky Germany reporter Ben Heckner, “Noussair is anticipating my arrival.”

De Ligt and Mazraoui are expected to be officially included in the squad before United’s first Premier League match against Fulham on Friday.

Meanwhile, Rio Ferdinand believes that it will be challenging for De Ligt to have a significant influence at Manchester United due to his history of injuries when playing for Bayern Munich.

“He has suffered numerous injuries and has not been a regular starter in games for the past two or three years. Despite this, Manchester United is investing £45-50 million in him,” stated the former Manchester United defender on Rio Ferdinand Presents.

Will he have a significant impact on Manchester United when he joins? I believe that is a significant demand for him, and he will be under close scrutiny.

‘There is a significant amount of pressure and opportunity for him, but there is also a considerable amount of doubt around this deal due to his underwhelming performances in his prior seasons with two prominent teams.’

Paul Scholes, a former colleague of Ferdinand at United, has also expressed disapproval of the move to acquire De Ligt.

‘Regarding Manchester United, we are referring about players who are unable to secure a spot in their team.’ De Ligt’s absence from Bayern’s lineup is a significant cause for concern, particularly given Eric Dier’s presence in front of him. “That is a significant concern for me,” Scholes expressed to The Overlap.

‘When you are acquiring players for £40m, £50m just based on their previous association with a manager from two or three years ago.’ Juventus released him due to his lack of proficiency, and it is evident that he has not met the required standards at Bayern Munich.

‘He is approaching us with the qualities and skills of a defender who is considered to be of lower quality or rank.’
