Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones confesses he is satisfied with Sergej Jakirovic and Hull City’s performance, which he expressed following Saturday’s 1-1 draw.

City appeared to be on track for a fourth consecutive league win after Joe Gelhardt’s fourth goal of the season and third in as many games, but replacements James Bree and Luke Berry combined to score a thrilling 91st-minute equalizer.

City appeared to be on track for a fourth consecutive league win after Joe Gelhardt’s fourth goal of the season and third in as many games, but replacements James Bree and Luke Berry combined to score a thrilling 91st-minute equalizer.

Both clubs earned seven points from the three-game week following the international break, and the two are tied on 19 points, with the Addicks in the final play-off berth after 12 games.

Speaking to Hull Live at the MKM Stadium, the Valley manager stated that Jakirovic has been doing well following a tough summer and his maiden excursion into English football.

‘Unbelievable’ – Sergej Jakirovic’s remark as Hull City manager confronts another setback

Mikey Lewis is listed as one of two England stars under pressure by NRL Grand Final winner.

“I think he’s doing a wonderful job,” Jones said. “This is a challenging situation to manage in. It’s a difficult position to manage given the demands that this club places on managers, and I believe he’s doing an excellent job.

“I told him that afterward, and I wasn’t being patronizing. I think he’s doing an excellent job, and I believe that when foreign managers come over here and find that this is the second tier rather than the Premier tier, they are taken aback, but I believe he’s adapted extremely well.”

With a number of players out due to injury and others nursing knocks from the previous two games, Jakirovic switched to a back three with two wing-backs, departing from his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation for the time being.

While it was partly due to fitness issues, the Croatian revealed it was also intended to counter Charlton’s threats, which Jones interpreted as a sign of his side’s outstanding improvement since promotion in May.

“Look, I have no idea why he did it, but if he did change for us, then yeah, it probably is (a mark of respect to the Addicks), but I don’t know if he did that,” replied the Welshman.

“I’m not sure if he felt it was the greatest approach to win a football game, regardless of what the opposition did. I can’t say why they changed, but if they did, that’s okay.

“Look, there are certain things that we do well. We do things we’re familiar with, play our own game, and try to impose ourselves. I believe it is more a tribute to us that we are playing our way into the Championship after moving up from a lower league, and we are confident enough to go after everyone and compete against everyone in our shape.

“Sometimes we need to discover solutions. We tried a little more direct late on to try to gain territory for a scoring opportunity, but I’m really delighted with our performance.”
