Prior to Saturday’s FA Community Shield matchup between Manchester United and Manchester City, Manchester United has an advantage when Sky Blues manager Pep Guardiola revealed that his team has suffered a significant injury blow.

Yesterday was the final preseason game between the Premier League champions and Chelsea. The team won 4–2, but Ederson, their first-choice goalie, was not deployed as a replacement.

Guardiola disclosed that he did not workout prior to the game, and the Brazil international did not even warm up.

Now, it’s unclear if he’ll be fit to play against Man United this coming Saturday.

The Man City manager stated, “Ederson had niggles; we didn’t want to take a risk.”

“He didn’t train yesterday. It’s lot better today. I didn’t want to take a chance, but I hope next week will be better.

Manager Erik ten Hag of Man United will be hoping that things have improved by the time they play Man City, as they lost their final preseason match 3-0 to Liverpool.

The Red Devils could strike if Ederson is unavailable on Saturday. Although they have Stefan Ortega as a reliable backup goaltender, Ederson’s absence is a setback for the Etihad Stadium team.

Leny Yoro and Rasmus Hojlund will not be available for Man United going forward due to injuries, however they too have injury concerns.

Young centre-back Will Fish had to be stretchered out after 28 minutes, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans, the defensive trio, all started the match against Liverpool but were removed with varied degrees of worry.

As a precaution, Lisandro Martinez was the only available centre defender for Manchester United; Harry Maguire did not play at all.

The Red Devils defeated Man City in the final game of the previous season to win the FA Cup at Wembley. It will be a good way to begin 2024–25 to begin the new season with a trophy following another victory over their fierce rivals in the city.
