But in the modern game patience is an increasingly rare virtue both on the terraces and in the boardroom.

The knives are already well and truly out for Lopetegui among the press.

That was always going to be the case when West Ham decided to part ways with media favourite David Moyes.

Lopetegui’s start had been inauspicious as the Hammers geared up to face London rivals Chelsea.

Not that you would know Chelsea were West Ham’s rivals from the passive, pathetic performance which unfolded in front of a sold out London Stadium.

Paqueta sends post about West Ham shambles under Lopetegui

The Irons were abysmal – as they were in the first half at Fulham last week – and were lucky not to lose more heavily.

The onus is on Lopetegui to show he can turn West Ham into a side that plays attractive football and gets results.

It’s clearly going to be no easy task on this evidence.

A big result is needed to get fans – and players by the looks of things – believing in Lopetegui and his methods.

Now one Hammers star has spoken out on social media in the wake of the dismal defeat to Chelsea.

Lucas Paqueta has sent a 19-word post about West Ham shambles under Lopetegui.

Not so magnifico Brazilian speaks out after Chelsea defeat

Paqueta has been seriously poor this season – as he was for all of the second half of last.

He’s not alone, though.

The Brazilian has been not so magnifico for the Hammers for too long. His place – along with several others – is surely now under threat from the likes of Carlos Soler.

Many fans want to see Mohammed Kudus play centrally too.

West Ham’s performance against Chelsea was shambolic from the start. Conceding a woeful gift of a goal after three minutes before going 2-0 down to a similar move.

To rub salt in the wound, West Ham then conceded two minutes into the second half.

It is the first time in West Ham’s 129-year history that they have lost their first three league games of the season.

The Hammers have also allowed more shots than any other team in the top flight with 83 – some 20 more than the next worst.

In mitigation Lopetegui is cleaning up the mess of a squad left behind by Moyes.

Now Paqueta has taken to Instagram to try and rally his teammates and fans.

‘We need to improve’ says Paqueta

“We need to improve, and we will continue to grow, believing that we can do more and better, together!!!” Lopetegui said.

Perhaps it’s because the defeat – and the manner of it – is still so raw, but that just sounds like words from Paqueta.

But he’s right to make the point ‘together’. It is crucial West Ham fans stick behind the team as Lopetegui looks to find a team that can be much more competitive.

Patience will only last so long.

In-fighting will only play into the football media’s hands, though.

They are desperate to say ‘we told you so’ over Moyes.

Even, though, the Scot is largely to blame for the fact West Ham had to undergo a turnover of 21 players this summer.

West Ham’s players will certainly have to heed Paqueta’s words quickly – it’s Liverpool at Anfield under the lights up next in midweek.
